Brick & Mortar: BENCH COFFEE CO. Slater St

Opened in 2014, BENCH COFFEE CO. Slater St is our very first store, it embodies our original vision of eliminating the barriers between staff and customers with its island-style bar, and has since set the tone for everything that followed.

Being one of the few coffee bars with an open bar concept at the time, the layout of the shop reflects our commitment on cleanliness, workflow efficiency, and genuine hospitality. The island-style bar was intended to draw people around it, encouraging conversations, connection, and transparency.

Brick & Mortar: BENCH COFFEE CO. St Kilda Road

BENCH COFFEE CO. St Kilda Road was our second concept store, following our original location on Slater St. Unlike our other stores however, this venue is situated within one of the area’s existing prominent buildings. This presented us with a unique challenge: how to create a space that doesn’t compete with the existing architecture, but instead works alongside it and responding to its character.

St Kilda Road has since become a staple for our south-side customers, particularly as one of our first venues to offer matcha as an alternative to coffee, and as a go-to grounding space to pause between the day.

Brick & Mortar: BENCH COFFEE CO. St Kilda Road

Located just further down from our original store on St Kilda Rd, our second cafe project embraces an unconventional approach to designing our spaces. Rather than competing with the existing architecture, this venue was one of the first cafe concepts where we worked alongside the existing materials and architectural palette, allowing the shop to coexist within the 580 St Kilda Rd’s lobby.

Defined by its generous ceilings, striking white marble espresso bar and communal table — and paired with the existing colours and material palette of the architecture, it brought us a space that feels both bold and naturally embedded within its surroundings.

Welcome to our Roastery in Brunswick.

Established in 2022 within a converted warehouse, the Roastery marked an important step in bringing our coffee roasting and bakery production together under one roof. Alongside LITTLE CARDIGAN it also became a place where the process behind our craft could exist a little closer to those who visit us.

Serving as our head of operation, it was built with elements of our earlier venues, creating a unified expression with BENCH COFFEE CO. as a brand. As with each of our locations, every element has been approached with intention and designed to foster a communal space between locals and visitors.
