Thank you for sharing your experience. We’re genuinely really sad that you walked away feeling as though we aren’t here for our locals, because that couldn’t be further from the heart behind this little café. ❤️
We are locals, for locals. We live here, work here, raise our families here and absolutely love this little corner of the Tablelands. From day one, we made a conscious decision that wherever possible, the money spent with us would continue circulating within the community around us.
Our coffee is grown literally around the corner in East Barron and brewed right here on site. Our sweet treats are either baked in-house or come from a small local family business. Our pies and sausage rolls come from our neighbours over in Ravenshoe, also a family-owned business. Our meat comes from farmers throughout the surrounding region very much paddock to plate and our fish is Australian. We employ local people and choose local suppliers, trades and services wherever we possibly can.
There is an enormous amount of heart and soul behind this little place, and keeping things local genuinely matters to us.
We’re also incredibly proud to welcome our pre-booked tour groups. Many of these travellers simply wouldn’t have had the opportunity to visit Malanda otherwise. We get to introduce them to our town, serve them locally grown and sourced food and coffee, and show them just how special this little part of the Tablelands is.
Our hope is that they leave loving Malanda, tell others about it, return independently, stay longer and spend money with other businesses throughout our region. Bringing people into our town and encouraging them to support the wider local economy is another way we believe we can support local.
Our tour groups have a standing reservation and arrive at a scheduled time each day. With our small kitchen, there can occasionally be a short pause or delay on hot food while we serve those pre-booked meals. We simply ask for a little patience and understanding during those busy moments while our small team does their very best.
We’ve also received so much beautiful feedback from locals who have visited outside those short busy periods people telling us how happy they are to have a little café like ours here with the doors of this beautiful site finally open again. Those conversations honestly mean the world to us.
That’s why comments suggesting we aren’t here for locals are particularly hurtful.
Everyone is entitled to share their experience, but we hope people also remember that behind every small local business are real people, local jobs, local farmers, local producers and other small businesses all supporting one another. Public comments can have a very real ripple effect, and when a small local business is hurt, that impact can flow through the wider local economy too.
We really wish we’d had the opportunity to have a yarn and explain what was happening on the day. If something disappoints you here, please talk to us. Give us the opportunity to listen, explain or make something right where we can. We will always welcome that conversation.
We’re new, we’re learning and we won’t get every moment perfect. But we are trying incredibly hard, and we are leading with a whole lot of heart.
We genuinely hope you’ll give us another chance to welcome you back, make you that hamburger and experience the little café we’re working so hard to create.
