There are few names more woven into Launceston’s story than James Boag.

Founded in 1881 on the banks of the Esk River, James Boag Brewery has been part of this city’s identity for well over a century. Brewed with Tasmania’s famously pure water, Boag’s became a symbol of local pride - a beer that reflects the character of Launceston itself: independent, resilient, and quietly confident.

For generations, a Boag’s Draught on tap has meant knock-off drinks with mates, post-match celebrations, long lunches, and stories shared across polished timber bars just like this one. It’s not just a beer - it’s part of the fabric of Northern Tasmania.

We’re proud to pour James Boag Draught on tap every day at The Tram Bar and you can even enjoy it for Happy Hour from 5–6pm.

A Launceston classic. Poured fresh. 🍺

Then & Now – Brisbane Street, Launceston 🚋

Once upon a time, Brisbane Street echoed with the hum of electric trams.

Launceston’s tramway officially opened in 1911, becoming one of Australia’s earliest regional electric tram systems. For over 40 years, trams rolled through the CBD - carrying shoppers, workers and evening strollers along tracks set right into streets like this.

Services ceased in 1952, and the tracks eventually disappeared… but the story didn’t.

Today, you can still step into that era - just in a slightly different way.
Our No. 11 tram carriage keeps the spirit of Launceston’s tramways alive, right here in the heart of the city.

Next time you’re walking down Brisbane Street, imagine the bell ringing and the carriage gliding past… then come and enjoy a drink inside one instead. History tastes better with a cocktail! 🍸
