The Royal Oak Hotel is a 'home away from home' and is one of those rare modern pubs that eschews gaming machines and pay-tv, preferring instead the grand art of conversation and conviviality. The Royal Oak Hotel is a generational place; stories and legends have been made, and continue to be made, within its interior. "The Oak", as it is affectionately known, is the reference point for many of Launceston's citizens, past and present.

THE AUDREYS // TONIGHT 🎶 Saturday

Twenty years of songs, three ARIA wins and a musical partnership that helped shape Australian folk and roots music. Tonight, The Audreys bring it all into our little Oak Shed.

The story started with Taasha Coates and Tristan Goodall, who met as university students in Adelaide in 1997. After a spell playing pop songs and slowed-down 80s covers in Melbourne, an impromptu bluegrass jam at a winery changed their musical direction. They headed home to Adelaide and The Audreys were born in 2004.

Then came Between Last Night and Us in 2006, with songs including “Banjo & Violin”, “Oh Honey” and “You and Steve McQueen”. It won the ARIA for Best Blues & Roots Album and began a run that would ultimately see The Audreys win the category three times.

They went on to play everywhere from Bluesfest and WOMADelaide to Falls and the Big Day Out, as well as touring the US, Canada, UK, France and Russia.

Now, twenty years after that debut, Taasha brings those songs back to the stage for a special anniversary tour, honouring both where The Audreys began and the enduring musical legacy of Tristan, who died in 2022.

And tonight, we get them up close.

Tonight Jack & Dane are bringing the glorious excess of the 80s and the guitar-driven rock of the 90s into the Front Bar.

Jack supplies the soaring vocals and storytelling. Dane brings the riffs, melodies and harmonies. Together they make a surprisingly enormous sound and play the sort of songs that cause an entire pub to suddenly discover it knows every single word.

Big guitars. Big harmonies. Big feelings. Absolutely no judgement when the singalong starts.

💙 BETWEEN LAST NIGHT AND US // 20 YEARS ON VINYL

Twenty years, an ARIA, Gold status and a hell of a lot of life later.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Audreys’ acclaimed debut Between Last Night and Us, the album has been given a rather beautiful new life on limited-edition clear blue vinyl.

Originally released in 2006, the record won the ARIA Award for Best Blues & Roots Album, achieved Gold status and became a modern Australian classic.

Following the passing of founding member Tristan Goodall in 2022, the album has taken on another significance too, as a lasting record of the creative partnership at the heart of The Audreys.

For the anniversary, it has been lovingly remastered by Alex Mader and pressed on clear blue vinyl, presented in a deluxe gatefold sleeve with an obi strip. A very handsome object for a very good record.

And this Saturday, you can hear the songs that started it all live when The Audreys bring their 20th Anniversary Tour to our little Oak Shed.

LAHGO // WHAT I NEED TOUR 🔥

Sydney duo LAHGO have spent the last year making a habit of packing rooms, getting sweaty and turning audiences into part of the show. On Friday 25 September, they’re bringing the What I Need Tour to the Oak.

Bassist Lee Denman and frontwoman Mel Bailey make honest, hard-hitting music about the sticky, difficult bits of being alive, then belt those truths out on stage with the kind of emotional release best experienced in a room full of people.

Their recent Great Southern Nights show sold out, demand exceeded capacity for their King Street Crawl set in Newtown, and they’ve been out supporting The Terrys and The Living End. Now they’re touring new material from their forthcoming EP, produced with Ethan Reginato, whose credits include Ixaras, Holly H**e and Charli Lucas.

There’s also something we particularly like about LAHGO: their commitment to getting more women on stage, onto production teams and into audiences, while creating shows that feel safe, connected and supportive.

One bloke. One guitar. One loop station. Considerably more noise than those ingredients would suggest.

Tom Booth has spent more than fourteen years playing pubs and bars around Tasmania, building a repertoire that stretches from the 60s right through to contemporary rock and acoustic favourites.

The clever bit is how he puts it together. Tom uses live looping to build guitar parts and layers in real time, turning a solo set into something with the weight and energy of a much bigger outfit.

Expect songs in the orbit of Crowded House, Powderfinger, Radiohead, Green Day, Eric Clapton, and plenty more, but built from scratch in front of you.

The sun is coming out, which means it’s time to take things upstairs.

Find a spot on the rooftop, settle in under the espalier apple trees and spend the afternoon exactly as nature intended: good drinks, good mates and nowhere particularly urgent to be.

Cold Tasmanian beers, local wines, cocktails and plenty of delicious non-alcs from the bar.
