Meet Keiko — My Right Hand at Hayabusa

Today, I’d like to introduce Keiko, my wonderful right hand at Hayabusa.

I’m so grateful to have her by my side. Her reliability, kindness and warm smile help keep our little restaurant running, especially on our busy days.

Thank you, Keiko, for always supporting me and Hayabusa. ❤️

We are a small team, but we put our hearts into what we do. 🇯🇵

Good morning.

A day late, but yesterday marked Shūbun (秋分), the Autumn Equinox, one of Japan’s 24 traditional solar terms.

On this day, the sun rises almost due east and sets almost due west, making the length of day and night nearly equal.

From this point onward, the nights gradually become longer, and we slowly move into the heart of autumn.

In Japan, the Autumn Equinox is also a national holiday — a day to honour our ancestors and remember those who have passed away.

Here in Australia, where the seasons are opposite to Japan, we are welcoming Shunbun (春分), the Spring Equinox, as spring begins to unfold.

Wishing you a beautiful day, wherever you are in the world.

And my apologies for sharing this one day late.

A very special visit to Hayabusa ❤️

We were so touched to receive this beautiful 5-star review from Kitty.

Her visit was particularly special to us because, on that day, I was unfortunately unwell and had to let her know that we would need to close the shop.

But at the last minute, Ben and Keiko were able to open Hayabusa and welcome Kitty just before her scheduled visit. Although I couldn’t be there in person, I stayed in touch with her by email and helped with her orders.
Ben and Keiko made sure we could still welcome our guests.

It was such a pleasure to see how much she enjoyed not only our food, but also the Japanese crafts, little treasures and cultural items we have carefully selected for our shop.

Kitty, thank you so much for your kindness, understanding and wonderful support. And thank you for sharing these beautiful photos and your experience with others. ❤️

For us, Hayabusa is not only about food.
It is also about sharing a little piece of Japan, creating connections, and making each guest feel welcome.

We are truly grateful that, despite the unexpected circumstances that day, we were still able to welcome you and make your visit special.

Arigatou gozaimasu, Kitty! 🇯🇵❤️
We hope to see you again in Kuranda someday.

A little piece of Japanese craftsmanship — SOLD OUT! ⚔️🍵

Our beautiful Japanese wagashi knife, inspired by the shape of a traditional samurai sword, has completely sold out!

Made using traditional craftsmanship from Tohoku, northern Japan, this unique little knife is designed especially for enjoying Japanese wagashi — turning a simple sweet into a moment of Japanese culture.

We’ve loved seeing our guests discover not only the beauty of wagashi, but also the craftsmanship behind the tools used to enjoy it.

✨ Sold out for now — but don’t worry!
We’ll be restocking these special pieces soon.

A little taste of Japan, right here in Kuranda.

Good morning.

Today marks Hakuro (白露), one of the 24 traditional Japanese solar terms.

The name Hakuro means “White Dew” and comes from the beautiful sight of dew forming on grass, flowers and trees as the night air cools, then sparkling white in the morning sunlight.

Although the lingering heat of summer can still be felt during the day, the mornings and evenings begin to feel noticeably cooler, and the signs of autumn gradually become more apparent.

It is also the beginning of the season of harvest, when delicious autumn fruits such as pears and grapes, as well as seasonal vegetables like autumn eggplant, come into their own.

Here in Australia, where the seasons are opposite to Japan, we are entering Keichitsu (啓蟄) — the traditional solar term associated with the awakening of insects and the beginning of spring.

Wishing you a beautiful day filled with the gentle signs of a changing season.
