After so many beautiful messages, offers of support and people suggesting a GoFundMe, the team at the real estate next door very kindly organised one for us following the fire. 💙

We’re honestly beyond grateful to everyone who has already donated, shared, checked in on us, supported our staff with temporary work and shown us so much community spirit. It’s already more than we could ask for.

With a long-term closure ahead, we’re working hard behind the scenes on an alternative trading operation and hoping to be back serving you all again as soon as possible.

We’ll leave the link here for anyone who had asked about supporting us, but please know the kindness we’ve already received means the world to us.

We wanted to share a little more about what has happened over the past couple of days, as our initial post only mentioned an unfortunate incident involving a neighbouring business.

Unfortunately, there was a deliberate arson attack on the real estate next door to us, understood to be connected to a domestic violence incident. The fire caused significant damage to their premises and also spread into the roof cavity above our shop.

Thankfully, the fire itself did not directly enter the inside of Kingfish & Chips, however there has been substantial damage within the roof space, including fire damage and soot contamination. As a result, significant works will now need to be completed to the roof structure before we can safely reopen.

Inside our shop, all equipment, surfaces and areas exposed to smoke and soot will also need to be professionally assessed, cleaned and, where required, replaced to ensure we can safely operate as a food business.

At this stage, it unfortunately appears that we may be closed for a minimum of a couple of months, with no confirmed reopening date yet.

Our thoughts are very much with everyone directly involved in the incident, as well as the surrounding businesses in the complex who have also been affected.

This has had a huge impact on us personally as a family-run business. Kingfish & Chips is our sole income while raising our three young children, and it also affects our casual staff members who rely on their shifts with us. We’d really appreciate you keeping our whole team in your thoughts while we work through what comes next.

We are doing everything we can behind the scenes to find a way to keep serving you in some capacity while these repairs are underway. With normal trade currently stopped, there are obviously financial limits around what we can make happen, but we’re exploring every realistic option and will do our absolute best.

Thank you so much to everyone who has already reached out and shown us support. It genuinely means more than you know.

I stopped eating our Kingfish & Chips for a week. Purely for science. Here’s what happened:

Day 1-2: fine, smug even. “I don’t need it.”

Day 3: noticeably sadder. Coincidence?

Day 4: hungry in a way that felt personal.

Day 5-7: time moved slower. Days got longer. Existence, dimmer.

Conclusion: inconclusive, but I’m back on the Kingfish & Chips and honestly relieved about it.
