Today we celebrate Mabo Day, honouring the life and legacy of Mer Island man, Uncle Eddie Koiki Mabo, whose courageous work overturned the false doctrine of terra nullius, (that the continent was a β€˜land belonging to no-one’ prior to British settlement). It gave legal recognition to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the traditional owners of their ancestral lands paved the way for native title and land rights.

Today marks 34 years since the historic Mabo No.2 case was handed down in the High Court of Australia in 1992.

We give thanks for the ongoing leadership of Torres Strait Islander peoples, who continue to care for Country and advocate for the protection of sea and land. We pray that their voices, including their calls for climate justice, will be deeply listened to and heard.

As National Reconciliation Week 2026 draws to a close, may we continue to be challenged and inspired to pursue justice, healing, and, right relationship with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

May we keep reflecting on the call from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Christian Leaders to be β€˜All In’ for reconciliation - committing ourselves to the shared journey of friendship, healing, justice, and flourishing for all.
