Last week our Fish Production team travelled west to Strahan to conduct routine health checks on our salmon. While these checks are carried out regularly, this round was a little different. For the first time, the team trialled Biomass Estimation Technology using a special stereoscopic camera.

By combining manual checks with the new camera equipment, the team can improve the accuracy of the data collected. This is an important step towards a future where new innovative technology could replace manual checks altogether. This could mean simply deploying a camera into the water to capture accurate fish health data, removing the need to manually handle fish.

Last week, Huon welcomed a group of keen IMAS students for a tour of our Feed Control Room🐟

The group included a mix of undergraduate and master’s students, all eager to learn more about feeding and nutrition in salmon aquaculture, particularly in a commercial setting.

Engaging with students and emerging industry professionals is something our team is extremely passionate about. Leading this is our Fish Production Analyst, Noah Jim. Noah regularly delivers presentations, hosts tours and helps bridge the gap between study and industry.

When planning these visits, he always asks himself: “If I was an undergraduate looking at a job in the industry, what would I want to know?”

By creating opportunities for students to ask questions, explore real-world operations and connect with industry professionals, we hope to inspire the next generation of people considering a career in aquaculture.

A few weeks ago we caught up with Amy Newlands, Huon’s Ships Compliance Officer, while the Huon supply, our feed vessel was up on the slip for maintenance. ⚓️

Amy gave us a behind-the-scenes look at the work happening on the vessel and shared what she enjoys most about working in maritime.

With today being International Day for Women in Maritime, it felt like the perfect time to share Amy’s story and celebrate the amazing women working across our industry.
