Spring at Shizuka | 静の春

September is almost over, and spring is becoming more noticeable around Shizuka.
The days are getting longer, there is more new growth in the garden, and little by little, we are leaving the colder days of winter behind.

At this time of year, we are sometimes reminded how far we are from Japan.
While our family and friends there are moving into autumn and beginning to enjoy cooler days, here in Australia we are heading in the opposite direction.

But after a long Hepburn Springs winter, it is lovely to see the garden coming back to life again.
We are looking forward to seeing what October brings.🌸

Thinking of a spring stay?
We still have a few rooms available on selected dates in early October, including:

• Saturday 3 October — one night
• Monday 5 October — one night
• Wednesday 7 October — two night
• Thursday 8 October — one night
• Monday 12 October — two night
Availability is limited and may change.

A Japanese-Inspired Day Trip from Melbourne.

You don’t always need a whole weekend away to feel like you’ve had a proper break.
Leave the city behind and spend the day in Daylesford and Hepburn Springs.

Start with breakfast at a local café, take a walk around Lake Daylesford, then make your way to Shizuka for an afternoon of Japanese bathing and Aromatherapy Massage.
Stay a little longer for our seasonal Omakase dinner before making your way home.

Just 90 minutes from Melbourne, but it can feel much further away.

Save this itinerary for your next day trip.

Eating the Japanese Way | 日本の食卓

When people talk about the health benefits of Japanese food, we often hear about individual ingredients — fish, seaweed, miso or green tea.

But perhaps what is more interesting is how these foods are eaten together.

A traditional Japanese meal brings many different ingredients to the table, usually in smaller dishes and prepared quite simply. Many of the foods now described as “superfoods” elsewhere are simply everyday foods in Japan.

Swipe through to explore a few things we can learn from the traditional Japanese table.

And if you would like to try it for yourself, join us for a Japanese breakfast or omakase dinner at Shizuka.

Dining reservations are available through the link in our bio.

Have you ever stayed at a Japanese ryokan?

A ryokan is more than a Japanese-style room.
From taking your shoes off before stepping onto tatami, to wearing yukata, bathing before dinner and sleeping on futon, the stay has its own rhythm.

Some of these customs may be completely new if it is your first time — and that's okay.
Swipe through for a little introduction to what you can expect when staying with us.

Chawanmushi | 茶碗蒸し

One dish our guests often tell us they enjoy at Shizuka is Yu’s chawanmushi.

Chawanmushi is a Japanese steamed egg dish that has been enjoyed for generations. Eggs are mixed with dashi and gently steamed in a small cup, usually with ingredients such as chicken, mushrooms or seafood inside.

It may look a little like a pudding, but it is savoury, not sweet. The gentle flavour of the dashi and the soft, silky texture are what make chawanmushi so special.

For many of us who grew up in Japan, warm chawanmushi is also one of those dishes that feels familiar and comforting.

If you haven’t tried chawanmushi before, we hope you might enjoy Yu’s during an omakase dinner at Shizuka.🥢

Spring at Shizuka | 静の春

September is here, and spring is about to begin.
How was your winter this year?

In Japan, spring is a season of new beginnings, with a new school year, new jobs and cherry blossoms arriving in April.
Here in Australia, spring comes at a different time and feels a little different.

At Shizuka, we notice it first in the garden — longer days, new growth and the first signs of the season changing.

As we leave winter behind, it feels like a good time to think about the season ahead.
What kind of spring would you like to have this year?🌸

Meet Shizuka

For those who may not know us yet, Shizuka is a Japanese ryokan in Hepburn Springs, Victoria, with just six guestrooms surrounded by gardens and Australian bushland.

Here, we welcome guests to enjoy some of the things we love about staying at a ryokan in Japan — soaking in a warm bath, seasonal Japanese food, tatami rooms, and simply having time to rest.

Catherine and our team have been looking after Shizuka for many years, and we continue to care for the ryokan little by little, while staying close to the Japanese customs and hospitality that have always been important to us.

You can stay overnight, visit for a bath or treatment, or join us for a Japanese meal.

We’ve also recently renewed our website, where you can find more about Shizuka and the different ways to visit us.

If this is your first time finding us, welcome. And to those who have visited Shizuka over the years, we hope to welcome you back again soon.

Shoji | 障子

At Shizuka, we have always paid close attention to the details of traditional Japanese architecture and interiors.
We want the ryokan to give those visiting from Australia a sense of what it is like to stay in Japan.

One of those details is the shoji in our guestrooms.

Shoji are traditional Japanese screens made with a wooden frame and translucent paper.
Rather than blocking the light, they soften it as it enters the room, while still providing privacy.

The soft morning light through the screens, the tatami underfoot, and the view of the garden beyond are all part of how a traditional Japanese room feels.

We hope that while you are staying at Shizuka, for a little while, you might forget that you are in Australia.

In Japan, June is the rainy season,
and also the season of hydrangeas.

Hydrangeas are flowers that look especially beautiful with raindrops on their petals and in the soft atmosphere that comes with rainy days.

For me as a Japanese, seeing hydrangeas always feels like a sign that this season has arrived again.

In Japan, we have a culture of enjoying the scenery that belongs to each season, such as cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in autumn.
Hydrangeas are one of those seasonal reminders.

Winter has now arrived in Hepburn.

Taking a warm bath. Enjoying a cup of hot tea.
There are some things that feel especially comforting during the colder months.

We hope you can experience this Japanese appreciation of the seasons here at Shizuka Ryokan😊

In Japan,
June is the rainy season called “Tsuyu” (梅雨).

Do you know how Japanese people enjoy this time of year?
For us, rain is not always something unpleasant.

Taking a long soak in a warm bath on a cool rainy day.
Enjoying a cup of tea or reading a book while listening to the sound of rain.
And falling asleep in a warm futon while listening to raindrops gently falling on the roof.
Watching the trees and gardens become greener after the rain.

These are some of the simple pleasures that come with the rainy season.

At Shizuka Ryokan, you can also experience this Japanese way of enjoying rainy days.

Why not slow down and enjoy a quieter moment this winter?🌱
