**BREAKING**
Tonight’s budget discussion brought some important news for Homestead taxpayers: the City Council has decided to keep the millage rate at 4.96 rather than increase it.
At a time when families are already dealing with higher costs for groceries, gas, insurance, housing, and everyday necessities, keeping the millage rate unchanged means residents are not facing an additional millage-rate increase from the City.
But the discussion also raised an important question about priorities.
One recommendation was to postpone hiring, including five proposed positions for the Homestead Police Department. If public safety staffing is being delayed in the name of fiscal responsibility, residents deserve a clear explanation of how that decision was reached and what data is being used to determine staffing needs.
That is especially important given questions surrounding Homestead Police Department’s crime-data reporting. The department has faced issues with its crime reporting system data for 2 years and residents deserve accurate, timely and transparent crime data when decisions about police staffing and public safety are being made.
Tonight’s message is simple: taxpayers are paying attention.
Keeping the millage rate at 4.96 is an important development for Homestead residents.
The City of Homestead constituents WIN!!
Stay safe.
