This is going to be such a fabulous day! The Geranium and Pelargonium Society will be running a bus from Melville to the Open Gardens in Darlington (stopping NOR for pick ups if required). Cost of $50 per person and we''d love to fill the bus and save you all the hassle and cost of driving into the hills for the day. We will be having a stall there and there will be so much to see and do! So, any of you that would like to have a great day out, please let me know!!🥰

The beautiful 'Indian Summer' has now settled into her permanent position and is covered in flowers and buds. This climbing Hybrid Tea rose bred in the USA by Carl G. Duehrsen in 1937 was introduced into Australia in 1939 by Hazelwood Bros. Pty Ltd. The flowers are huge, highly fragrant, starting with classic HT buds opening to crinkled centres and then becoming blowsy and heavy, finally showing golden brown stamens. The flowers come in a range of salmon pink, creamy yellow, crimson red and orange shades. It has yet to begin to climb and the flowers on mine have more pink tones than orange (which I actually prefer!) I was very fortunate to purchase this rare beauty from Jan at the Societies Fair last year and I am delighted that I did!

I do rather love a characterful nursery and always take the opportunity to visit Nightingale's Nest & Nursery in Kojanup when travelling past. William and I always enjoy visiting here, checking out the antiques and bric a brac and invariably take home some new treasures 😉🙂

As we drove into Williams I was struck by how beautiful the 'Millbrook' Wormwood and Wisteria hedge looked in full flower. I have visited this garden preciously when it was open, but I haven't been past for a number of years. The hedge is quite tall now, however there were still beautiful glimpses to be had. As an artists residence, 'Millbrook' has always been rather enchanting and was a beautiful foil to the many lovely sculptures and artworks within the grounds. Heritage roses bordered the Wormwood hedge inside the gardens and although the hedge has grown so tall a few ladies seemed determined to show their pretty faces! The garden was alive with fragrance, colour and sound; birds were calling and singing over the humming of bees and pollinators. It was utterly delightful to walk along the path hearing them.

Another pit stop on the Mt Barker trip was to this lovely Museum and Heritage Rose Garden located just on the outskirts of town. The gardeners were clearly proud of their heritage precinct and are to be commended. I had a quick stroll just after daybreak and although it was a little misty and squelchy, it was worth the wet feet to wander through the gardens and enjoy their ambience. The roses looked amazing, all in full growth and bursting into bud and all named!! I would recommend a visit should you be out this way!

The Shire of Kojonup has made the following post in regards to the Heritage Rose Gardens in my earlier post. It appears that although at some stage previously there was a discussion to remove the roses, that was not the intention of the Shire when these roses were assessed and prunned. They also have undertaken soil analysis (thank goodness) to support the regrowth and address issues in the rose beds as necessary. The information given to me by the worker repairing the retic was thankfully, totally incorrect!!! I still have grave concerns about the prunning of many of the roses but we will have to give them the benefit of the doubt and wait and see what the outcome is. A HUGE thank you to all of you for the time you spent making phone calls and sending emails to the Shire Of Kojonup. They certainly now know how important the gardens are to us all! THANK YOU!!🥰🥰

William had to make a trip down to the Great Southern region this week, so as always I jumped at the opportunity to travel with him and cross off the Heritage Rose Maze at Kojanup from my bucket list!!
Having checked out photographs on a number of occasions we scheduled enough time to have a nice coffee break and a stroll through the maze together.
You cannot begin to imagine our shock as we parked the truck and saw the destruction that has occurred there!! We could NOT believe our eyes, and I actually felt physically sick!! Hundreds if not thousands of roses have been pruned almost to ground level, it literally is horticultural vandalism!!! When I asked the fellow working on the retic why they had been cut back so harshly I was told that they were going to be 'grubbed out and planted with natives'!! Moreover, when I pointed out they were Heritage Roses, one of the biggest collection in WA and a huge tourist attraction he responded with 'they are not Heritage listed'!! No care or responsibility from that little man, what the hell is going on with the Kojanup Shire that they would enable such vandalism? How can this damage and loss of rosestock be mitigated and how quickly can these roses in the exposed soil be mulched to protect them?? I heard last night from Louise that Jan and the Perth Heritage Roses are aware of what has occurred but we need to rally to protect this garden!! What can we do to assist? I have attached some before photos from the website to show the contrast. The others are mine.
