We’re hiring. The French Island General Store is seeking a friendly, reliable all-rounder for the summer season — mid-to-late October through March, casual, with ongoing potential.
French Island is an off-grid eco-tourism destination where visitors come to hike, cycle and spot koalas. The store is the island’s central hub: lunch and coffee, e-bike hire, local information and 3 accommodations.
This varied role spans our general store, café, tourism services, accommodation and customer service.
Duties include: café service and food preparation; cooking across the grill and deep fryer; sandwiches, salads and menu items; coffee, beverages and milkshakes; table service; counter sales and cash handling; phone and order taking; stocking and displays; e-bike hire enquiries; accommodation check-ins and turnovers; and general cleaning.
We’re looking for someone reliable, honest, diligent, friendly with customers and comfortable in a fast-paced kitchen, hospitality and retail environment. Experience in hospitality, retail, tourism or cafés highly regarded.
You’ll need:
* good cooking and food preparation skills
* strong customer service skills
* RSA and Food handling certification
* current driver’s licence
* weekend availability, plus flexibility for some weekdays
* right to work in Australia
Hours (aligned with ferry arrivals):
* Saturdays and Sundays, 10:00am – 3:00pm
* Some weekdays, approx. 11:00am – 2:00pm
Getting here: French Island is accessible only by ferry, from Cowes on Phillip Island or Stony Point on the Mornington Peninsula; or barge — about an hour from Melbourne. Multiple daily ferries, rosters can be arranged around them, parking available at departure points, and we can arrange weekend pick-up from ferry.

-their long neck isn’t just elegant…it allows them to plunge deep for aquatic plants
-black swans pair for life
-they need 40 m or more of clear water to take off.

Ever wondered what the sand balls are that ‘decorate’ the beach spiral or circular patterns?
They are the ‘output’ from Sand Bubbler Crabs who sift and clean the sand of organic matter…their lunch.
These little sand cleaners are only 1cm wide, and found on the shores of the UNESCO Western Port Biosphere Reserve around French Island.
