Today on International Women’s Day we’re celebrating the women who came before us, the ones who shaped our families, our values and the communities we love.

These photos are of our owner’s Emmeh (mum), our beautiful Téta (grandma), and the other women who helped shape our family. Women whose strength, warmth and generosity continue to inspire us every day, who came to Australia from Lebanon to build a life and future here for their families.

Here’s to the ommahat, tétat, banat, sadeeqat who make the world a better place.

LEBANESE COFFEE (aka Arab coffee / Greek coffee - depending who you ask)

As a kid, I grew up watching the whole family, especially the women, sit together with tiny cups. Talking. Laughing. Catching up on everything (Gossiping. Discussing husbands. Solving the world’s problems.)

And when the coffee was finished,
someone would flip the cup onto the saucer
and suddenly it wasn’t just coffee anymore.

It was the reading.

Everyone leaning in like it was serious business. Like the cup knew something.
Like the grounds were about to expose someone.

Pointing to shapes in the grounds.
Mountains. Paths. Faces.
Telling me what it meant.
What was coming.
What to watch out for.

I don’t remember all the readings.
But I remember how seriously they took it.
Like the cup was another way
of looking out for each other.

And that part
always stayed with me.
