Big Hearted Education Supporting Family Day Care Educators

Your resources won't pay your bills when you retire. Your super might. πŸ’›

This might be uncomfortable to hear, but someone needs to say it.

As family day care educators, we're often made to feel like we need to keep buying more resources to prove our worth.

But what if that money was invested in your future instead?

The children you're caring for today won't be the ones helping you through retirement. That's why it's so important to remember you're not just an educator. You're also a small business owner.

Invest in beautiful resources that add value to children's learning, absolutely. But don't forget to invest in yourself too.

Future you deserves that.

Family day care isn't a step down. It could be the career move you've been looking for. πŸ’›

I've worked across different areas of early childhood education, and becoming a family day care educator was one of the most rewarding decisions I've ever made.

Instead of trying to meet the needs of 24 children, I had the opportunity to truly know the 4 children in my care, build meaningful relationships, and create learning experiences that reflected who they were.

Is it always easy? No.

But neither is working in a centre.

If you've been wondering whether family day care is the right next step, perhaps it's time to see it as an opportunity, not a compromise.

Have you ever considered making the move? I'd love to hear your thoughts. πŸ‘‡

Behind on your tax bill? You're not alone, and there's a way out. πŸ’›

In this episode, I asked Shannon from what a family day care educator should do if they've fallen behind on tax. Her advice was simple and practical:
βœ… Get to an accountant STAT! Don't sit with the stress alone
βœ… Sort out a payment plan so it's manageable
βœ… Set up a separate account to save your tax $$ every week, so you never get caught out again.

Running a family day care business is so much more than programming and planning, it's also learning the money side, so your business actually works for you.

πŸ‘ŽCalled us childcare workers.
πŸ‘ŽCalled a grant a pay rise.
πŸ‘ŽSaid FDC is included.

All wrong.

I have a genuine question for the Prime Minister and his cohort of ministers:

If Family Day Care is included...

Why does the government's own website still say we're not eligible?

I'd genuinely love an answer.

Do you think Family Day Care has been genuinely included in this announcement?
Yes or No?

After nearly 12 months away from the mic, I'm back, and I have a lot I want to share with you.

This episode is for every educator and service coordinator who has been watching the landscape shift and wondering: is this the end of family daycare? The short answer is no. But it IS a season of change, and the way you move through it will determine whether you're still standing on the other side.

In this episode I talk openly about what I'm seeing across the sector right now, more service closures than I've witnessed in 14 years, the financial pressures behind them, and why it's not a reflection on you or the work that you do.

I also share what I believe separates the services and educators who will survive this season from those who won't, and it might not be what you expect.

This is real talk, with love, for the profession I care deeply about.

Can we stop asking what everyone else charges and start asking what it actually costs to run a Family Day Care business?

Every time I see educators asking:

"What are others charging?"
"What's the going rate?"
"My scheme says I shouldn't charge above the cap."

I cringe.

The educator down the road doesn't have your mortgage, your bills, your expenses, your goals or your business.

Your fees should be based on your numbers, not theirs.

Have you factored in:

β€’ Your wage
β€’ Super
β€’ Tax
β€’ Sick leave
β€’ Annual leave
β€’ Food and resources
β€’ Utilities
β€’ Insurance
β€’ Professional development

Because if you haven't, you may be working for less than minimum wage.

And that's exactly what I'm seeing happen.

Some educators are being encouraged to charge below the CCS cap without any consideration of what it actually costs them to operate.

That's not sustainable.

If educators can't run viable businesses, they'll close their doors. When that happens, children, families and the entire sector lose.

If you need help working out your numbers, send me a message with "Profitable FDC" and I'll send you the details of my step-by-step workshop that helps educators calculate the minimum hourly rate they need to run a sustainable business.

It's time we stopped guessing and started treating Family Day Care like the professional business it is.
