Starting a new little thing today. We have quite a lot of gear from the venue and we want to ensure it continues to be used to support shows by new and emerging and independent artists while we’re finalising and moving into our new digs.

So we’re launching Lazy Thinking DIY today and will be making all of our gear and equipment available free of charge for DIY shows upon request. We’ll also look to keep it going as a continuous service after we’re in at the new place.

We’ll want to make sure your show is a legit DIY show via a few simple questions, but all very straightforward and the gear is available easily and quickly.

Apply now via the link in the thingy at the top. Email [email protected] with any questions or if you want to lend or donate any gear for our new thing.

And so our time is now up with the Dulwich Hill space.

I’m immensely proud of what the first Lazy Thinking space achieved in its nearly three years and have an an almost unbearably intense mix of love for the myriad people who have passed through it, pride at knowing we achieved what we set out to do, excitement at knowing the future is bright (both for lazy thinking and the independent music community despite the obvious current challenges), and grief at losing so special a space.

I want to say a bottomless thank you to many people. Firstly all of the staff who have worked so hard, from the very early shows when we desperately raced around Dulwich Hill trying to find a bass amp 25 minutes before autobahns__ were scheduled to play (and somehow did), to some of the 12 hour shows we did in our last few weeks. Thank you. For your immense work, generosity and limitless dedication to making Lazy the very special and personal place it has been to so many people.

To the many, many, many artists who performed at the space. I hope we looked after you in the way we wanted to. The most important part of our live music programming has always been prioritising new and emerging artists and providing them with a safe and always accessible place to play. I like to think we never lost sight of that.

And to the people who came to the shows. Thank you. To those who came every week, thank you. To those you wandered past, thought ‘what in the actual living.. is going on here?’ and popped in for an hour or three, thank you.

Lastly, despite the enormous disruption of an eviction on many people in many ways, just a call out that we are totally committed to avoiding being dispirited about the change in any way.

So forever onwards. We have a new artist in residence starting later in the month, three incredible long form records being released very shortly through the label, a free music education program we’ll be running at two locations shortly and the pressing business of finalising our next new space for shows.

See you out there soon.

Ok, so we have a comically and extraordinarily tight turnaround to make sure we can honour our final scheduled shows, give the first place a proper send-off, and hand the keys back to our landlord.

We’ll be having a bit of a garage sale and working bee this Sunday from 12 to 5:30. The garage sale will have a s**t ton of Lazy Thinking stuff and items from our first home available, including kitchen equipment, furniture, vinyl, the bespoke handmade Lazy Thinking plates, cutlery, glassware and a lot of other random stuff from the venue.

We also have larger items like our deep fryer and grill that we are looking to get rid of quickly for next to nothing.

We will also have quite a bit of Lazy Thinking memorabilia available by donation, including sections of the poster panels that have covered the venue walls for the last few years, as well as our blue bar tables currently bolted to the wall, blue bench, Driveway of Dreams furniture and that ridiculously amazing shelving unit for the record store in the middle of the venue. If you can bring the necessary tools and extricate this stuff from the venue, it’s all available to a good home for a donation of your choosing.

If you’re interested in picking up any of the larger items from the venue, email us at [email protected].

And if you want to stick around, we could also use a bit of help dismantling and sorting the myriad things in the venue. Email us at the same address if keen so we can manage numbers. We’ll take care of drinks of all persuasions and sustenance throughout the afternoon.

We’re working really hard and fast on finding the ideal location for our new home, so don’t worry, we won’t be moping around on Sunday, just getting the s**t done we need to so we can move onto the next chapter.

Not really sure what to say about this event. This is the last ever show at the Dulwich Hill venue. We’ve deliberately kept it as a bit of a family affair and focused on artists we’re especially close to.

Nothing else to say. Please do pop by for one last time in our original home. We’ll be starting early and going late.

Hey folks, just a quick update after our teeny announcement last week.

We’re not massive fans of those platitudinal sentiments about being taken aback by a response, but nevertheless: a very profound, heartfelt and sincere thank you to absolutely everyone who has responded in any way. There are a big handful of amazing people who have near limitless energy and work extraordinarily hard to keep Lazy Thinking alive (which is always very difficult), and knowing there is love and support for what we do means absolutely everything to us.

Things are already moving very quickly. We’ve already looked at several potential new venues and are close to finding (two no less!) temporary homes for our soon-to-launch open access education program and record label shows. Thank you to the many people who have reached out, offered help, sent us leads, said nice things or simply reminded us why we do this.

We’ve also been asked by a lot of folks how they can help, so here’s the rundown.

The new Lazy Thinking model is now effectively entirely dependent on our incredible donor circle, donations from the general public and our increasing numbers of members and supporters. We’ve realigned our fundraising to focus on our relocation fund, and you can find a link in our Linktree. We live in a world of increasing inequality, so please help us if you can afford to, and don’t if you cannot.

There are two other things you can do. If you know of anyone who can help us find a new venue, please contact us. We want to make absolutely sure the new venue is financially sustainable, so while we’re moving quickly, we’re also treading carefully.

Secondly, we’ll be announcing our final fortnight of shows at the end of the week. There are quite a few new and pretty magical lineups coming, so please frequent the venue and those shows if you can. Stick around, have a burger, have a couple of drinks, buy some merch from the artists, make a donation, or any combination of the above.

It’s been a big week, but we are hugely bloody excited for the future. See you in Dulwich Hill at the original Lazy Thinking location over the next two weeks, and at our new events and location soon after.

Hi everyone, a bit of an announcement.

We’ve been evicted from our Dulwich Hill home. Our landlord has informed us we need to vacate by the end of the year and, as a result, we’ve decided the venue will close at the end of August, with our final show taking place on Saturday 29 August. We could have remained open for another few months, but we’ve decided not to.

The venue loses money every month it’s open. That’s never changed. We keep the doors open via a handful of extraordinary donors, the occasional government grant, one-off donations and, increasingly, our members. Every month we’re open means another month of fundraising to cover those losses. Three years of doing that is pretty tiring, has taken a toll, and we’d rather spend the next four months building something than subsidising a building we already know we’re going to lose. So it goes.

You’ve probably noticed we’ve started doing a few other things at Lazy Thinking. We’ve relaunched the label, now offer a year-round artist residency program, started a sync arm aimed at getting early-career artists in the door, and were two weeks off launching a free education and training program (so yeah, expect a small delay on that one). So we’re going to use this as an opportunity rather than a setback.

So here’s what we’re going to do. We’ll finish up at our current space at the end of August, take a tiny breather, then focus on building an even better, more meaningful artist development organisation.

We’ll shift our fundraising towards establishing a new permanent home, something we will work tirelessly towards. One that’s financially sustainable, can comfortably be supported by our new model and reflects the way we now live and socialise.

This is life. We remain eternally optimistic about the future, both of Lazy Thinking and the local industry, despite the extreme challenges the latter faces.

We’ve deliberately kept a handful of dates free during the second half of August. If you’re an artist with a genuine connection to the room and want a final Lazy show, get in touch.
