What does a restaurant do before the first guest arrives?

Quite a lot, actually.

Long before the doors open at Crittenden Restaurant, the kitchen is already busy. Produce is being delivered and prepared, sauces are simmering, bread is baking and every element of each dish is being readied for service.

Out front, tables are set, glasses polished, menus checked and the team talks through the day ahead, from new dishes and w**e pairings to special occasions and dietary requirements.

It’s the quieter part of the day, but an important one.

Because genuine hospitality begins well before we welcome you through the door. It’s in all those small details that come together to make lunch feel relaxed, warm and effortless.

Then the first guests arrive, the w**e starts pouring, and service begins.

Our vineyard and lakeside gardens are home to a wonderful variety of birdlife, from graceful waterbirds gliding across the lake to smaller native species flitting through the vines and trees. Early mornings and late afternoons are especially magical, when the estate comes alive with birdsong.

It is one of the quiet joys of spending time here. Whether you are staying in the villas, enjoying lunch at the restaurant or visiting the cellar door, take a moment to look up and listen.
