On the latest episode of Why Do We Care?, I sat down with Julia Coorey, also known as Michael's Mum. This incredible woman shares how she manages life caring for her eldest child Michael, who was diagnosed with severe nonverbal autism aged eighteen months, alongside his two younger sisters.
Between training support workers, juggling therapy, home schooling, and just simply keeping Michael and her family safe, Julia shares the extreme complexities of daily life.
To survive her new normal, Julia has harnessed her writing skills from her former life as a lawyer, to be a voice for carers in Australia. She started the page ‘Michael’s Mum’ to talk about the challenges she could see all carers, including herself, having to face to ensure their family survives. Her posts have created a community of carers who resonate with her observations of the NDIS, government and what real care actually looks like.
