Nasturtiums are the best baking paper, try it next time your heating up/cooking up anything pastry that’s savoury. Turn your pie upside down onto a fresh leaf for the last 6 minutes of cooking then use a slide to flip it back as they’re now crispy and fragile. Super delicious too. No nasturtiums? I’ll bet someone close by has.

Rainy weekends make for the perfect kitchen cook ups and hook ups in my opinion. I’m taking advantage of my delicious nasturtiums that crisp up nicely under the pies and staying open if you want to come and try for your self. Take away always welcome, arancini are on till they’re gone and quince frangipane for after. Vegetable or lamb pie available and possibly a wild green pie by midday - bar opens at midday and the coffee machine stays on till mid afternoon closing today.

Quince and frangipane tart-very un fancy. So many quinces and so good just like this when you’re keen to be quicker than the prep time. On this week.

There’s only so many jet planes one can watch come and go before one starts to twitch and stir. Next week we will be closing Wednesday 6th through to Saturday 9th to quell our twitches and refuel with inspiring surrounds.
Next week will only be Monday and Tuesday trading and will look forward to seeing you Monday 11th May.

So about those figs I poached a few weeks back. I finally bit the bullet and did what was calling opposed to what Larouse would suggest. Wattle seed syrup poached figs, topped with quick roasted pear slices, baked in butter puff pastry and finished with fig jam. Not as overly sweet as you might imagine and on the menu all week.

Love food, love local. Grown here on island
We can’t help ourselves when it comes to spruiking island goodness, near impossible in fact. Inspiration, in all its deliciousness, ready to be unleashed for when the odd lunch returns.

It’s that time of the season when you think “let’s go all out and splurge on ripe figs, almond frangipane and butter puff” after spending too much time deliberating. It could have gone in a savoury direction with prosciutto I guess. Next time.

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday’s are losing the afternoon flights from here on in at our favourite regional airport. Winter is approaching and so our new schedule will also determine our opening hours-no more late afternoons for us Tuesday, Wed and Thurs only 8-11am mornings. So how does all this relate to the photo above? Well, I’m thinking we should put the odd lunch together here and there, with the same brief requested for this lunch. It was along the lines of free reign which means I get creative with what’s at hand. It’s my favourite thing to do when we have time and we now have time.

This lunch was for Belinda and Sue. Mouth Flat Partridge Spelt Pie with KI Potato, cucumber salad and fresh ciabatta.

Yes I’m bias and this was extremely good.
