MEET THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE FARM 🌱

Meet Kayla 🫶🏼

Raised on a farm in South Africa, dirt, dust and mud are nothing new to her. Choosing a shipping container in the middle of a sweet potato farm over a polished café setting was a bit of a no brainer ~ and her work boots have been put to good use.

Kayla knows her speciality coffee, works hard, owns the concept of initiative and sees what needs doing about two milliseconds before she does it.

Outside of work, she’s studying medicine, is a seriously talented photographer and is about to become a Kingy local.

She’s recently stepped into a Supervisor role with us, bringing that same focus and drive to the our day to day.

From her farm in South Africa to our farm in Cudgen, she fits right in around here.

Come and meet another one of the bloody brilliant people who make this place what it is. 🤎

You hear a lot of talk about ‘paddock to plate’ often loosely applied when it’s not always entirely correct. As farmers, we believe deeply in this philosophy and adapting it to our coffee and our partnership with willysbeanscoffee we term it ‘farm to final cup’.

We proudly choose to work with someone with integrity, traceability and an investment in the coffee farm right from its earliest stages. We choose to pay a higher price for this level of connection with the farm, the roaster and your coffee bean delivered fresh to us each week.

Farmers support other farmers first. It’s what we do. It’s been conditioned into us from the earliest ages.

This is no big name no face brand. This is a genuine partnership from the earliest stage of the process and it’s a partnership we are bloody proud to be a part of. A privilege.

The ethos of agriculture underpins all of our businesses, from the mothership Cudgen Road Farms, to Mate & Matt's and now here at Thirteen. Farmers first, always.

💪🏼There are volunteers… and then there’s Kevin Kennedy.

Around here, he’s affectionately known as Cudgen’s Finest Volunteer. He’s officially retired. So he keeps saying.

Truth is, retirement for Kev seems to mean swapping one job for another. These days he’s usually found helping his now grown kids with whatever disaster, project or random problem we’ve managed to create.

This week it was our turn at Thirteen.

We hit not one… but two problems that were well outside Jane and Jess’s skill set. Feeling defeated, out of ideas & wondering if a husband might show up soon with a skillset wider than ours. That didn’t happen.

Then, right on cue… Jane’s dad rolls in.

Within minutes he’d worked out solutions to both problems. Within 48 hours, the fixes were built, installed and done.

Just a bloke who can seemingly fix anything and is always happy to help.

We’re pretty sure every family thinks they’ve got the world’s best dad… but we’d argue Jane’s Dad is pretty bloody hard to beat.

Thanks, Dad. I’m so proud that Cudgen’s finest volunteer is my Dad. Thank you for always helping me.
