✨ SATURDAY ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | CHRISTINE BYRNE — HONEYEATER GLASS
There is something magical about glass — particularly when the artist allows heat, chemistry and a little unpredictability to become part of the creative process.
This Saturday we're featuring Christine Byrne of Honeyeater Glass, whose beautiful fused-glass pieces bring together her love of art, science and the natural world.
Dividing her time between the Adelaide Hills and San Francisco Bay Area, Christine originally trained in Zoology and Ecology. Her creative practice now spans some 25 years, beginning with traditional stained glass before evolving into her current passion for warm, or fused, glass.
Christine is particularly fascinated by reactive glass. During firing, the chemistry within different glasses can interact, producing wonderfully organic changes in colour, pattern and texture — meaning the kiln itself becomes part of the creative process.
Each piece then undergoes careful finishing and hand-polishing before returning to the kiln to be formed into elegant bowls and platters.
The result is glassware that sits beautifully between art and function — pieces that can be admired on a wall or table, yet are equally at home holding fruit or becoming the centrepiece of a shared table.
Christine sums up her philosophy beautifully with the idea that the things we surround ourselves with should be useful, beautiful — and ideally both.
