Here are Bill and Betty Hinton — artist, photographer and the team behind the wonderfully unique Floravilla Art Gallery & Tea Gardens at Cow Bay.

More than three decades later, Floravilla is still here — and Betty is still creating! 💚

Today, visitors can wander through the gallery, discover Betty’s beautiful botanical and wildlife art, enjoy the rainforest gardens and, of course, choose from Betty’s organic small-batch ice creams, still made right here at Floravilla. 🎨🍦🌿

🎨 Betty Hinton Art & Daintree Floravilla

Betty Hinton is a renowned botanical and wildlife artist whose connection with the Daintree spans more than 50 years. Her detailed watercolours celebrate the remarkable plants, birds and wildlife of Tropical North Queensland and Further afield.

Her botanical artwork has received international recognition, including an exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution, with work held in the Shirley Sherwood Collection.

Today, Betty continues to paint at Daintree Floravilla, surrounded by the rainforest that has inspired much of her life’s work.

Visitors can discover Betty’s art while enjoying Floravilla’s famous handmade organic ice cream and peaceful tropical gardens — a unique combination of art, rainforest and ice cream in the heart of the Daintree.

🌿 Nature at work at Floravilla… 🌧️

After the latest Daintree rains, something rather beautiful caught our eye in the garden.

Look closely at this palm — its trunk has become a living canvas, covered in incredible patches of lichen that have developed slowly over many years. Creams, yellows, greys, rusty oranges and deep browns… nature creating its own artwork. 🎨🌿

But here’s the fascinating part…

Right beside it is another palm of the same species — yet its trunk has an entirely different pattern of lichen!

Same garden.
Same rain.
Same tropical conditions.
Two completely different works of art. 💚

They gobble up fruit, wander through the forest and… well… 💩 spread the seeds along the way!

These incredible birds play a vital role in keeping our ancient rainforest growing — but they need our help.

🌿😂 FLORAVILLA FRIDAY — FROM WAIT-A-WHILE TO WOW! 😂🌿

It all started in 1968…

Bill and Betty Hinton began making their annual pilgrimages to the Daintree, camping at Forest Creek and Noah Beach and falling completely in love with the rainforest.

On that very first visit they decided:

🌿 “If we can find a block of land here, we’re buying it!”

Fast-forward to 1982 and they finally did.

Welcome to paradise!
Well… sort of. 😂

Their new Cow Bay property was an old log dumping ground, tangled with wait-a-while, stinging plants and rainforest chaos. Betty remembers that much of it was almost impossible to walk through.

Not exactly move in, unpack and put the kettle on! ☕🤣

But Bill and Betty weren’t easily frightened off.

They rolled up their sleeves and slowly transformed that wild block into their home — and eventually into the Floravilla we know today. 🌿

Back then, even getting around the Daintree was an adventure. Much of the road was one lane, with a gentleman’s agreement: when two vehicles met, whoever could manage it best backed up until the other could squeeze past! 🚙🌴

And through it all was their great love of the Daintree — its rainforest, wildlife and extraordinary plants.

From those humble beginnings grew Floravilla. 💚

And all these years later, Betty is still here — painting, telling a good story and, of course, keeping the ice cream factory busy! 🎨🍦

Oh, if those rainforest trees could talk…
Actually, with Betty around, they probably don’t need to! 😂🌿

🌺 From sticks to spectacular! 🌺

A few of you asked to see our beautiful Bombax flower up close… so here she is! ❤️

Not long ago, the tree looked like nothing more than sticks against the Daintree sky — you could be forgiven for thinking it had called it quits! 😄

Then came the tiny buds… and suddenly BOOM! 💥🌺
These magnificent red flowers burst into bloom.

Nature certainly knows how to put on a show at Floravilla! 🌿❤️
