Xylitol is the next ingredient for my ice cream and it has some super strange health benefits.
Xylitol is a sugar supplement that is neither sugar nor alcohol, its chemical; structure resembles something in between. Xylitol is an all-natural substance that is produced by the human body during normal glucose metabolism, in fact, humans produce up to 15 grams daily during this time. In nature, Xylitol is found in fibrous fruit and vegetables such as; berries, mushrooms, birch trees and corn cobs. It looks and tastes like sugar, but with fewer calories and carbohydrates and teaspoon for teaspoon, behaves like normal sugar in all of your recipes.
However, although xylitol looks and tastes like sugar, that is where the similarities end. Xylitol is merely sugar’s mirror image. While sugar wreaks havoc on the body, xylitol heals and repairs. It also builds immunity, protects against chronic disease and has anti-aging benefits. Considered a five-carbon sugar, xylitol is antimicrobial, preventing the growth of bacteria. Whilst sugar is acid forming, xylitol is alkaline enhancing. All other forms of sugar, including sorbitol, another popular alternative sweetener, are six carbon sugars which feed dangerous bacteria and fungi.
Xylitol has no known toxic levels and has a long list of crazy health benefits, some of these include:
*Clears nasal passages
*Heals wounds
*Prevents ear infections
*Reducing intraocular pressure
*Reducing periodontal disease and heart disease
*Diabetes management
*Dental care
*Weight loss
*Improved digestion
So for obvious reasons, Xylitol is the sweetener of choice in our
nutritious ice cream.
