Iuk is the local Wurundjeri word for Eel, and for Eel season.

March marks the start of the Western season Autumn, but also the change into Iuk season. If you're on Wurundjeri land, you'll notice that the hot winds from prior months turn cooler and the days and nights are now of equal length.

What you may not notice unless you're out connecting to Country is that the river banks look different too. The Karawun (spiny-headed mat-rush) and reeds along the Birrarung (Yarra River) are used for making eel traps as the short-finned eels are large enough to be hunted for harvest as a sacred food source. And maybe if you peer into the water, you'll find more insects, frogs and yabbies than usual.

And along the shore, the Manna Gum is in flower. It is used as a medicine, for its sweet nectar and it's water vessels.

Naarm (Melbourne) is known for it's chaotic weather. Unpredictable, ever-changing and elusive. And while its more recent inconsistency can be attributed to climate change, we can also look to what the Wurundjeri of this land have always known... the real seasonal patterns of this Country.

The European seasons - Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring - are most familiar to many of us. But looking at what happens during Iuk season, you see our surroundings reflected more deeply, in a way that connects us all closer to Country.

Iuk season happens to be our CEO Bec's favourite season! Passionate about the Iuk and their migration patterns - from Vanuatu to up the Birrarung and back - at STREAT we've been learning much about what this beautiful season brings.

As part of our energetic and dedicated Youth Programs Team, alongside Magic the Therapy Dog, you’ll lead structured intake and assessments, provide short-term case management, and deliver engaging work readiness and life skills programs for marginalised young people aged 16 to 24, supporting them to build confidence, capability and real pathways to employment during their time at STREAT.

🥐 Baker/Pastry Chef 🥐
We’re looking for a talented, dedicated baker or suitably experienced pastry chef to join our bakery team. This role focuses on producing our bakery and patisserie range with consistency, care and attention to detail. Working independently within a supportive kitchen environment, you’ll bring strong experience with yeasted doughs (viennoiserie highly regarded), excellent food hygiene and OH&S standards, and a genuine passion for high-quality products. Occasional weekend availability is an advantage, and Australian work rights are required.
