A charming couple passing through on a long drive stopped in yesterday. You can always spot the travellers, looking about a bit, asking what is good.

They got their coffees and something to eat, sat by the window a while, and on the way out the woman declared our little bakery the absolute highlight of their journey. She said it so warmly and so plainly that I believed her, and it carried me right through the rest of the afternoon. 😊

You forget sometimes, when it is the same faces and the same street every day, that to someone driving through we might be the whole memory of the town. A warm room and a good coffee on a cold day. Not a bad thing to be remembered as.

A good part of the town is moving at a remarkably slow pace this morning, and I know exactly why. A fair few rose at some ungodly hour to watch the World Cup football beamed in from the other side of the world.

You can pick them a mile off. Bleary eyed, a bit vague, ordering on autopilot. So we have been brewing the coffee just a touch stronger today, a small mercy for the dedicated souls trying to face a working week on three hours' sleep. ⚽

There is something I love about our quiet country town getting swept up in a match played half a world away. Everyone comparing notes on the game, all a bit worse for wear together.

With the children back at their desks, the weekday mornings have settled back into their familiar shape. Second day of term and it is as though the holidays never happened.

There is a lovely lull that descends once the school bus has been and gone. The early rush scatters, the parents head off to work, and for a little while it is just the regulars, the low murmur of the radio and the hiss of the coffee machine warming back up. ☕

The holidays are grand, but I will admit there is something steadying about knowing the shape of the day again. The town runs on its rhythms, and this is one of the good, quiet ones.

The school term has started up again, and you could almost hear the collective groan of early alarms going off across the district this morning.

It was a pleasure to welcome back the familiar faces of parents after the first school run in a fortnight. They come in a touch frazzled, half a uniform still under discussion, someone's hat already gone missing, all of it in need of a decent coffee before the day can properly begin. 🎒

There is a certain quietly relieved look on them too, though. Two weeks of slow mornings is lovely right up until it is not, and I reckon the whole town, kids included, is a little ready for the routine to come back.

The school holidays are nearly done, and you can feel the town quietly bracing itself for the return to routine. There is a certain stillness to this last Sunday before it all starts up again.

I will miss the mid-morning chaos of the youngsters, if I am honest. The fortnight of them crowding in for hot chocolates and jam drops, no school bags, no rush, grandparents in tow. It makes for a lovely sort of noise, and the shop feels a bit quieter without it. 🐕

But there is plenty to be said for a peaceful Sunday too. Families in no hurry, a dog waiting patiently out the front, the long slow morning that a winter Sunday does so well.

Enjoy this last quiet one before the great Monday machinery cranks up again. How are you spending it?

Saturdays have a busy hum the weekdays never quite manage. It builds through the morning and then, near enough all at once, it feels as though the entire town has decided to turn up within the same lively half hour.

The door does not stop. Families in no rush, someone back from an early walk, two blokes deciding what to have like it is a proper outing. A queue that nobody minds standing in because it is warm and there is always someone to talk to. A splendid sort of chaos, greetings and orders all tangled together. 🥐

I barely look up for a couple of hours, and then it eases off as quick as it started and the shop goes quiet again, cups everywhere and the good kind of tired setting in.

If you are having a slow Saturday, come and be part of the buzz. It is the best morning of the week to be here.

One of the quiet pleasures of this job is watching the town's mood shift on a Friday. The step is a little lighter, and you can pick it before anyone has said a word.

The tradies come through with the weekend already gleaming in their eyes, claiming their usual pies on the way to the last jobs of the week. There is more chat, more takeaway coffees heading out the door, everyone half into the weekend in their heads already. 🥧

It is a fine thing, sending them off well fed and in good spirits at the end of a working week. Half the job, really, is knowing what someone will order before they have reached the counter.

A couple of the local youngsters wandered past the window this morning with their hoods up and nowhere in particular to be. Took me straight back.

The winter holidays seemed to go on forever when I was that age, in the best possible way. You were out the door after breakfast and not home until you were hungry, a hot sausage roll in hand if you were lucky, the whole day stretching out ahead with nothing you had to do. 🥐

Different times now, I know. But watching those two amble past, in no rush, kicking a stone between them, I reckon some of it has not changed as much as we like to think.

Whereabouts did you spend the school holidays as a kid? I would genuinely love to hear where you all got to.

A little girl came in this morning and gave the sweets in the glass cabinet the kind of solemn concentration I rarely manage about anything all week.

Grandma was paying and in no hurry. School holidays, nowhere in particular to be, so we all just waited. The girl looked at everything twice. Pointed at one thing, changed her mind, pointed at another, then went quiet to think it through properly. Choosing exactly the right jam drop is a serious responsibility when you are that age. 😊

Her grandma caught my eye and we had a quiet laugh over the top of her. In the end she went with the same one she always gets, which is usually how these things go.

The holidays bring the little ones in, and it is easily my favourite part of this time of year. Who have you got keeping you busy this week?
