The first coffeehouses that originated in London in the 17th Century were called Penny Universities. People would pay a penny to come in, and once inside, had access to coffee, the company of others, newspapers, bulletins and the latest news and gossip. Instead of paying for drinks and alcohol, people were charged a penny to enter the coffeehouse, and this was awesome for a number of reasons. Firs

tly, it only cost patrons one penny to enter, which meant that people of all social and economic classes could come in and engage in debates and discussion with one another. This created a unique environment at a time where society placed such high importance on class and economic status. Aside from attracting an eclectic group of people, Penny Universities were awesome because people would share their knowledge and opinions. More importantly, the lower class mingled with the higher class over a cup of coffee - not alcohol. So instead of losing a bagillion brain cells from consuming alcohol, people would leave Penny Universities feeling more intelligent and enlightened than before they came in. Frankly, we’re your modern day Penny University and we want you to come in and feel welcome... and leave with enlightened tastebuds.
