Prices in Hong Kong now are from $70kg right up to $90kg for some and $120pce for some of the large fish. Prices ranging from $70kg to $120pce. Fact. Verifiable. Now have i got your attention ????

Some fishing boats have gone through the process of becoming export compliant so they can export directly from the boat. Great idea. But im told one boat took 18 months to 2 years to achieve that process. Thats scary. That isnt necessary for a heap of reasons.
One being, we will shortly offer a fish packing service for any fishermen that want to export their own fish. No 2 yrs putting it together, no wait and it will be cheaper than doing it yourself, by around $8,000 - $10,000 a year. Yes. Guaranteed. Thats just in fixed costs, compliance etc .
The economics of having someone with nearly 20 yrs live fish experience packing them for you, advising on who to send fish to, who not to send fish to, how many fish and what sizes to send , speak for themselves.
If you think that isnt necessary. Think about this, one very big exporter in the industry had 11 of the first 13 bins of live fish they ever sent die, fact. a loss of around $250,000. That should not have happened. And the manager there was reasonably experienced.
They are your fish, you will be sending them to the customer, , you will be getting paid, the only middle man is a packing cost that will be insanely less than doing it yourself. Watch this page for final details. Now to balance this service with the likelyhood of doing the same for Tropical Rock Lobsters, mmm
Now remind me, what did you get for your last unload ???

This one might cause a stir but good. The Live Trout industry needs a kick in the guts to get going. And i dont see anyone even getting out of their chairs, let alone putting boots on for the task. Two issues to approach here and they are good outcomes all round for fishermen.
1/ I have heard rumours of '' free quota if you sell to us'' . Wow, why woudnt you......
And i dont know for sure this was offered or how it would be structured, but there is really only one transparent way to do that.
The buyer has to pay the same price , on the invoice as you might be able to obtain in the free market, or the same price as the last boat they unloaded (without a free quota offer. ) Then quota for that trip is used with no charge.
No shaving it off the beach price to cover the cost of the ''free quota'' and saying the fish were too green or missed the flight to get the best price, yawn yawn yawn, those old excuses. No guys. Thats not cricket.
2/ Now i have a question, if your buyer can afford to give you free quota (it costs them whatever their lease return was going to be)
Why dont or didnt they just pay you a better price for your fish ?
Why after some chopping and changing of suppliers , do exporters suddenly feel the urge to offer and assist and give free quota . If they could afford to , why dont they just pay you more. ? mmmmm.....
One more short but interesting post to follow, likely to inspire some action in these guys.

Some interesting happenings at Wild Reef Seafoods. We have been looking at converting one of our 10,000L Live Trout Tanks into a holding and packout tank for Live Tropical Crays. Having been approached by a few catchers within the last 6 to 12 months. They are unhappy as competition is non existent with only a couple of buyers. Prices they receive compared to sell prices in HK are disappointing and the weight loss and mortality issues with just the short flight down the coast defy comprehension , 10% weight loss ? Come on guys / girls. We are looking at different marketing structures too, something that will return the best price for the fisher. They can control their destiny, from reef to teeth (not mine and it will be a challenge to get that slogan off the ground...) . This isnt set in stone yet, but the fishers who we have spoken to, are very keen to be in a position of effectively exporting their own crays.
Which leads me to the next step along for us.

I found a way to brighten the colour when killing and slurrying fish too, again a total accident , and of course, im not saying how. Twice now ive had the same result, a lot better end product than what you expect from the colour of the live fish...mmm. The fisher who supplied the fish in the photo knows who he is, and they didnt look that good alive, im sure he will agree.

Fish shipped out yesterday, i think thats the best looking box of fresh fish ive ever sent, and lost money on it . Damn !. . Killed 7am shipped out 1pm. These had been in the tanks for 3 or 4 weeks, awaiting some good news overseas. Nice to see the tanks can hold good fish in perfect condition for nearly a month. Had to bite the bullet and do something with them. ouch.
