Big news this week for Waste Not Food Recycling. We were announced as a successful recipient of a Regional Economic Development grant. This will fund some of our capital expenditure required towards getting a Broome based pilot plant up and running. Very grateful to Minister MacTiernan and the Labour State Government for seeing the potential for organic waste management and regional aquaculture, and supporting the project. Big months ahead getting the pilot set up!
Farming Black Soldier Flies doesn’t sound particularly glamorous, but this is innovation at its best.
Waste Not Food Recycling is setting up northern WA’s first fly farm - they will take organic waste from across Broome, feed it to Black Soldier Fly larvae, then use the high-protein larvae as feed for the aquaculture industry.
This reduces waste in the North West, creates a quality feed source for our local aquaculture industries, and will drive new job opportunities in Broome.
Waste Not Food Recycling was founded by Broome’s Lauren Bell, Runner-Up in the 2020 WA AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award - and we’re supporting the project with a $97,000 RED Grant.
Imaginative WA women like Lauren are seeing insect farming can create ingenious answers for waste management and sustainable protein manufacturing - exciting stuff for the Kimberley!
