Are We Teaching Players to Understand Batting, or Preparing Them to Perform Under Pressure?

A player can know all the right coaching points and still struggle when the game becomes real.
They may know where their head should be.
They may know when to go forward or back.
They may know what the “correct” shot should look like.

But cricket does not only test what a player knows. It tests what they can do when the ball is moving, the field is set, the pressure is building, and the next decision matters.
This is the difference between knowledge about and knowledge of - a distinction discussed in the work of Dr Rob Gray and ecological approaches to skill acquisition.

Knowledge about is what a player can explain. Knowledge of is what a player can actually use in the moment.

This is why Neuro Batting is not built around simply giving players more information or trying to make every movement look perfect. The aim is to help players recognise, decide, adapt, execute, reset, and take ownership under game-like pressure.
Technique still matters. But technique must serve the problem the game is asking the player to solve.

A good-looking shot that does not fit the ball, field, or situation is not good performance.
Real development is not always clean. Players need opportunities to make decisions, feel pressure, make mistakes, adjust, and learn what works for them.

The goal is not to create players who only look good in the nets.

Are we coaching players to look good, or coaching them to perform?

In many cricket environments, players are judged by how their technique looks.

Front elbow up.
Head still.
Big stride.
Nice shape.
Correct shot.

These things matter, but they are not the full picture.

A batter’s job is not simply to look technically correct. A batter’s job is to solve cricket problems.

Can they recognise what the ball is offering?
Can they make the right decision?
Can they access scoring areas?
Can they adapt when pressure builds?

A beautiful shot can still be a dot ball.

If the ball goes straight to a fielder, misses the scoring area, or fails to manipulate space, it has not solved the batting problem.

That does not mean every dot ball is bad.

A good leave is not failure.
A good defence to a quality ball is not failure.
Respecting the right ball is mature batting.

But missing a realistic scoring opportunity is different.

If the ball gives the batter a chance to access space and they repeatedly miss it, pressure should build. That is not punishment. That is cricket reality.

This is where Neuro Batting is different. We do not only ask: “Did the shot look right?”

We ask: “Did the shot solve the problem?”

Technique still matters. But technique must serve the game. It must help the player score, survive, rotate strike, access space, manage pressure and adapt.

Many batting mistakes are blamed on technique.

But technique is often the final link in a much longer chain.

Before a batter can execute a shot, they must:

👁 SEE the ball
🧠 DECIDE the best option
🏏 EXECUTE the movement
🎯 CONTROL their emotions and focus before the next ball

If vision breaks down, the brain receives poor information.

If decision-making breaks down, the wrong shot is chosen.

By the time the technical mistake appears, the real problem may have started much earlier.

If emotional control breaks down, pressure begins to influence performance as it carries over to the next ball.

Batting is not just a technical skill. It is a processing skill expressed through movement.

Every ball requires the player to manage information, pick up cues, make a decision, and execute under time pressure.

When young players are overscheduled, tired, emotionally loaded, or constantly rushing from one activity to another, their cognitive load is already high before training begins.
This can reduce attention, slow perception, weaken decision-making, and make movement look rushed or inconsistent.

From the outside, it may look like a technical issue. But often the player’s brain is simply overloaded and processing too late.
