Earlier this year, Pierce Pipe Organs wished Derek Smart, our foreman of 34 years a very happy, and well-deserved retirement at the Morrison Steakhouse, South Brisbane. Bruce Lang, noted Brisbane Organist and former Administration Officer of P.P.O., was our special guest.
Derek started his organ building career as the last apprentice at Whitehouse Bros under the supervision of Les Langham when the firm was run by Kevin Whitehouse. After the demise of Whitehouse Bros, Derek went to Sydney where he worked in a furniture restoration workshop. Derek returned to Brisbane and worked for Bert Jarrott for a while where he also met Simon. Leaving Bert, he worked for Larry Miles as a furniture restorer and in 1992, Derek came to Pierce Pipe Organs as workshop foreman. He is well-known for his love of fine cabinet-making and french polishing, as well as soundboard making, both cone-pallet and slider. He made the casework and soundboards for instruments such as St Paul's Ipswich and the St John's Cathedral Chamber Organ.
We wish Derek and his wife, Kerry, all the best for a well-earned and long retirement, and thank him for being an integral part of the Pierce Pipe Organs team.
