Winter has been full of fishing trips for us lately , although, to be honest, the fish haven’t been biting much!
The surf has been glorious ..
So I turned to something we all seem to crave on those cold, chilli evenings: a slow-cooked, comforting stew with deep, rich flavours.
But there’s no meat in this one.
It’s JACKFRUIT. 🌿
With the right sauce, spices and a little slow cooking, jackfruit takes on an incredibly meaty texture :almost like pulled pork or shredded beef. It’s one of those dishes where you might genuinely forget you’re not eating meat. Recipe is now on my Substack
We made a big pot and enjoyed it over a few days , after the fishing or surf trips ;with potato or celeriac mash and plenty of green vegetables, tucked into tacos, or piled into sandwiches.
Jackfruit isn’t in season here at the moment, but you can easily find it canned in health food shops and selected stores. It’s such a simple plant-based alternative when you’re craving those rich, savoury, slow-cooked flavours and the fish is not biting , whether you don’t eat meat or simply feel like taking a little break from it.
