BACK BAR STORIES | VOL. 32 🍻📖
Bethanga Football Club
There are plenty of stories still to tell about the Bethanga Football Club, so consider this one just the beginning.
The club’s story stretches all the way back to 1907. Over the decades that followed came different leagues, periods of recess, amalgamations, premierships, grand finals and plenty of local names that we’re sure many will recognise.
But for this week, we’re letting the photos do most of the talking.

Bethanga was competing in the Hume Football League during this period.

A big year in the club’s history. Bethanga and Granya had merged in 1958 (Granya/Bethanga Bombers), and became Murray United in 1959. After Murray United folded, Bethanga spent 16 seasons in recess before Bethanga Football Club reformed in 1976, joining the Tallangatta & District Football League.

There was good reason to get this group back together. The 1991 senior side made it all the way to the Tallangatta & District Football League Grand Final, where they were defeated by Holbrook.

By the end of the 1990s, though, country footy was facing its challenges. A 1999 Victorian Country Football League report reportedly identified Bethanga among a number of clubs at risk unless changes were made. The club began playing matches at Martin Park in Wodonga, and the TDFL records the move there in 2000 as “a bold move to survive.”
2001 would be the final season under the Bethanga name. In 2002, permanently based at Martin Park, the club became the Wodonga Saints Football Club, carrying a history that had begun in Bethanga almost a century earlier.
And that’s really only scratching the surface.
There is so much more to Bethanga’s footy story, and we’ve got plenty more photos, names and memories to share in future Back Bar Stories.
For now, have a flick through these ones and let us know who you recognise. ❤️
