National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The origins of NAIDOC Week trace back to Aboriginal rights movements in the 1920s, including the Australian Aborigines Progressive Association and the Australian Aborigines League, which sought recognition and justice for Indigenous peoples.
The theme this year is “50 Years of Deadly” celebrating five decades of NAIDOC Week, and the official poster is Paralpi, by Zaachariaha Fielding, a proud Yankunytjatjara man from the APY Lands in South Australia. (see below)
Here in the Bega Valley, we acknowledge and thank the hard work of Merrimans, Bega and Eden Local Aboriginal Land Councils.
Their ongoing efforts have been vital in bringing these events together each year, creating meaningful opportunities to celebrate Aboriginal people, culture and achievements, and to recognise 50 years of NAIDOC, with many more years to come.

Join us for NAIDOC Week Storytime as we celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture through stories, songs and a fun craft activity for young children. Suits children aged 2 to 9. Free event.
