Witaj Maj, trzeci maj, dla Polaków błogi raj!
Poland's Constitution Day is celebrated on May 3rd every year to honour the constitution of 1791, which was the first written constitution in Europe and the world's second written constitution after the United States. The constitution was co-authored by King Stanisław August Poniatowski, the Great Sejm (Polish Parliament), and prominent politicians and intellectuals of the time, and it aimed to modernize the country and strengthen its democracy.
The constitution guaranteed the rights of citizens, including freedom of speech, religion, and assembly, and introduced new laws to protect people and improve their social status. It also established a constitutional monarchy, limited the power of the king and nobility, and introduced the principle of the separation of powers.
Despite the constitution being short-lived (it was annulled by Russia in 1792 and Poland was partitioned by its neighboring countries), it served as a symbol of Polish independence and democracy throughout the centuries of foreign occupation and oppression.
Today, Poland's Constitution Day is a national holiday and an occasion to celebrate the country's history, culture, and democratic values.
