🐟🍟 A LESSON IN RESILIENCE: WHY THIS DINNER MEANT SO MUCH

After a grueling few days reporting on the frontlines of the Warnbro fires, I headed to In Ya Basket at Settlers Hills for a quick meal. I’ve been a regular here for years, but tonight reminded me that behind every shopfront in our town is a story of incredible courage.

Many of you know Phuong Bui and James for their smiles and the best chips in town. But for those who don’t know the history, Phuong is the definition of "Baldivis Brave."

Back in 2017, the community was heartbroken when Phuong’s husband, Alan, passed away suddenly. Left to raise two young children while keeping a small business running, Phuong’s determination became an inspiration to us all. I remember the stories from 2019, when local residents and businesses rallied together to give the shop a surprise makeover while she was overseas, a true moment of "Baldivis Spirit" that showed we look after our own.

Fast forward to tonight. When I walked through the doors, Phuong was there with a grin from ear to ear. When I went to pay, she stopped me. "It’s on me," she said.

She told me she has been following the Baldivis Times and our fire coverage. She shared how much she appreciates the way we are paving a new path for local news and chasing our dreams.

Coming from a woman who has survived the toughest challenges life can throw at you and kept her dream alive for her family, that hit home.

It’s easy to get lost in the digital side of reporting, the reach, the views, the stats. But standing across the counter from a local legend like Phuong is a massive reminder of why I do this. We don’t just report on this community; we are part of it.
