Well done to our own rider, Jasmine Lynch on winning the Ride to Time State Championships held yesterday. Jasmine and her lovely grey, Gracie, rode well to be within 0.31 seconds of the optimum time over the 1000m course. State Champions!

Which decisions does your horse get to make?

We decide when our horses eat, where they live, who they share a paddock with and what work they do. Much of that is necessary. But where could we safely give them more say?

Last month, the Scottish Government published new equine welfare guidance, developed with the National Equine Welfare Council to help owners and carers put current welfare knowledge into practice. It encourages care that gives horses positive experiences and a good quality of life.

One aspect is choice: giving horses opportunities to influence what happens in their daily lives.

That could mean:

▪️Being able to approach a compatible companion or move away for some space.

▪️Choosing between shelter and an open area as conditions change.

▪️Having room to explore and choose where to stand, rest or roll.

▪️During a scratch or grooming session, being able to move away, with us noticing and respecting that response.

The choices available will depend on the horse’s health, their environment and what is safe. A horse on a managed diet, for example, still needs appropriate limits on grazing.

While the guidance applies in Scotland, this focus on positive experiences is consistent with Pony Club Australia’s Horse Welfare Policy, which encourages us to notice what our horses enjoy and make time for it.

Next time you’re with your horse, pause and watch: when they have a choice, what do they do?

How great was it to have Kat and Rhi and their amazing liberty horses at our rally to show us what amazing things can be achieved when you develop a bond with our fourlegged friends. Remember to go to and follow their page, like and share the post to go into the draw for a spot in a full day clinic.
