🇵🇹 The Classic Bifana – A True Taste of Portugal! 🥖🐖

If you’ve ever wandered through a Portuguese market or festival, chances are you’ve caught the irresistible aroma of marinated pork in a spicy sauce — that’s the beloved Bifana!

A true street food favourite, the bifana is made with thin slices of marinated pork, simmered in a garlicky, slightly spicy white wine sauce, then tucked into a fresh crusty bread roll that soaks up all that delicious flavour.

When travelling in Portugal the options for street food are endless and irresistibly delicious. Choices are many and differ across the country.

Some popular options are the traditional pork sandwich Bifana 🐷, the beef sandwich Prego 🐮, Bolinhos de Bacalhau 🐟 (codfish fritters) and pastries called Rissois.

For those with a sweeter tooth, the Pastel de Nata (portuguese tart) is found right across the country and Bolas de Berlim 🥯 (fried custard donuts) are also a popular choice 😋 Roasted chestnuts 🌰are also widely available through the winter and a delicious traditional treat.

The pastel de nata originated in the early 18th century at the Jerónimos Monastery in Belém, Lisbon.

The monks used egg whites to starch their clothes which meant there were many egg yolks left unused. From this practice, the recipe of the mouth watering pastel the nata was born 🥚
