📜 The Not-So-Secret Origin Story of the Chicken Parma! 🍗
Alright, gather ‘round for a juicy tale about everyone’s favourite classic—the legendary Chicken Parmigiana! 🎵🥁
First things first: Note that the Chicken Parmigiana is named after the king of cheeses, Parmesan?! 🧀👑 That's right, folks, the Chicken Parmigiana pays homage to that divine, crumbly cheese from Parma, Italy. So, let’s keep it classy and call it by its rightful name—Parma!
But how did this "hot mess" of flavours make its way into our hearts, homes, and, most importantly, our bellies? Grab your fork, and let’s dig in! 🍴
A TALE AS OLD AS... THE 1900S? 🕰️
The original "parmigiana" hails from Italy's southern regions—imagine fried eggplant with tomato, cheese, and basil. Simple, elegant, and downright delicious. But somewhere in the 1900s, our beloved dish took an international detour as Italians migrated to America and beyond, with a chicken version popping up in Maryland in 1944 (alongside spaghetti… but let’s not even go there 😅).
Meanwhile, over in Argentina, a late-night kitchen mishap at a restaurant called Napoli gave birth to the “Milanese a la Napoli”—a breaded beef dish topped with ham, tomato, and cheese. Did they invent the parma? Who knows! But one thing’s certain: it made its way through their kitchen before landing on our plates.
THE GREAT AUSTRALIAN "PARMA" BOOM! 🇦🇺
Here in Australia, the story gets even tastier. The first mention of a chicken parmigiana on our shores was in a 1953 Adelaide newspaper. And rumour has it, the very first chicken parma to grace an Aussie pub menu was cooked up by none other than Captain Cluck’s long-lost great-great-grandfather, who knew that combining a crispy chicken schnitzel with layers of ham, Napoli sauce, and melted cheese would be a recipe for cluckin' success! 🐔🍽️
By the 1980s, the parma had hit its stride, taking over pubs from coast to coast and becoming the beloved classic we all know today. Whether you're in Melbourne proudly saying “parma” or (dare we say) wrongly calling it “parmi,” one thing is for sure—the parma has secured its spot in our hearts (and stomachs), and we’re cluckin’ proud of it!
