514 orders in August. The biggest month Tiny Beets has ever had.
I’ve been sitting on these numbers for a few days trying to work out how to say thank you properly. So here’s what August looked like from the kitchen.
Just over 5,100 meals packed and sent. Close to 400 suburbs and towns. Every state and territory.. 233 packs of Birthday Muffins went out, so apologies to everyone whose bub is still covered in raspberry.
But the number that actually got me: 1 in 3 of the families who ordered in August had ordered before. You came back. That’s the whole thing, really.
When I started this I was doing 5 orders a week out of a shared kitchen. In August we averaged about 115 a week

Yes, that’s liver. And yes, the kitchen knows about it.
Here’s why I keep making it anyway.
Around 6 months your baby’s iron stores from birth start running out, right as their needs jump to 11mg a day. That’s more than a grown man needs. Chicken liver has about 11mg of iron per 100g. Beef mince has 2.3mg. It’s also heme iron, so little bodies actually absorb it, and you get B12, folate, choline and vitamin A in the same spoonful.
Liver is strong stuff though, so babies only need a little. About 30g a week is plenty.
Now, the smell. That sharp metallic hit comes from the iron in liver reacting with its own fats, and heat speeds it right up. Fry it hard and you make more of it. So I steam ours instead. Gentle heat, no smoking pan, no hot oil. The liver stays tender instead of going grainy and chalky, the B vitamins stay in the food instead of leaching into boiling water, and a fair bit of the strong stuff drifts off with the steam.
Is it still strong? Mate. It’s liver. But it’s a much friendlier version than the one your nan used to fry.
Then it goes in with parsnip, pumpkin and spinach, because sweet veg does the rest of the work.

Six years of boxes.
The first one was [held together with tape and hope]. I was doing 5 orders a week out of a shared kitchen and packing them at the bench myself.
Same hands packing them today. Just a lot more of them.
