The Tuckabox Restaurant is located on the main street of Andamooka, only a short distance from Roxby Downs. We cater for all functions e.g Birthdays, weddings, shift shows etc. Or just don't feel like cooking, let us do it for you! The original Tuckabox Restaurant was built in 1960 and sold again in 1962 to an enterprising Greek from Sydney. Steve Smirnios bought the site from a series of photos a
nd travelled over 2,000km from sydney to set up home. In 1987 Steve decided to expand and build a 'new' Tuckabox, from volcanic rock. These incredible rocks weigh between 1-2 tonne each and are found in the desert, many miles from Andamooka. They had to be loaded and unloaded by fork-lift and transported by truck before being assembled, an amazing effort taking about 2 and a half years to complete.
'Tuckabox Steve' and his restaurant have survived and flourished from their humble beginnings and become a significant part of Andamooka's history. In 2004 Steve retired and his son John who worked along side his father since 1985 took over the family restaurant.
