Repair Cafe Surf Coast

Repair Cafe Surf Coast Repair Cafes are all about repairing things (together) We are fighting the throwaway culture and building community one fix at a time!

The Repair Café Surf Coast was started by two Fairhaven residents in July, 2017 with volunteers from across the Surf Coast. Each month (except January and July) we bring together a team of skilled volunteers from our community to help visitors repair all their broken and worn-out items and save them from landfill.

Meet Kate.

Kate has lived in Aireys Inlet for seven years and has recently joined the volunteer team at the Repair Café. She is passionate about the environment and sustainability and loves getting involved in the community, so it's a perfect fit!

Originally from Adelaide, Kate has also lived and worked in London, Taiwan and Hong Kong. A science graduate, she began her career teaching secondary school. Along the way she studied Outdoor Education. After raising her family, she worked at the Gould League Recycling Education Centre and then decided to retrain as a primary teacher.

One of Kate's favourite roles was working as the garden teacher with the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program at Elwood Primary School, helping children discover the joys of growing and an understanding of ecology and sustainability. Her final job was working in environmental education at the Port Phillip EcoCentre.

Retirement certainly hasn't slowed Kate down. She's a valued member of the Community Garden team, and an active volunteer with ANGAIR, serving on the Education Committee and joining the environmental weeding team.

When she's not volunteering, you'll often find Kate boogie boarding with the Sunny Seals—yes, all year round! She learns French, practises yoga, and her absolute favourite – dancing.

Another wonderful day at Repair Café Surf Coast last Sunday!

There was a gentle flow of visitors throughout the day, keeping most of our 27 amazing volunteers happily busy.

Here's how the day looked:
🔹 70 visitors
🔹 53 repair visitors
🔹 74 items brought in for repair
🔹 103kg of waste saved from landfill
🔹 19kg sent to landfill
🔹 Over 44kg of textiles collected for recycling

A huge thank you to everyone who dropped by, whether you came with something to repair, recycled your unwanted textiles, or simply stopped in for a chat.

Our visitors also generously supported the Repair Café by purchasing some of Julie's beautiful hand-knitted creations. Every purchase helps support what we do, so thank you!

A special thank you also goes to the wonderful members of the CWA, who joined us with their delicious cake stall. Their homemade treats were hard to resist, and we were incredibly grateful for the scrumptious scones, sausage rolls and zucchini slices they generously also provided for our volunteers.

It's days like these that remind us how strong our community is when we work together to reduce waste, share skills and enjoy good company.

We look forward to seeing you at the next Repair Café on August 9th!

Meet Sue.

If you've lived in Aireys for a while, chances are you know Sue—though she'd be quick to point out that her real name isn't "Sue who used to work at the Post Office"! Sue owned and ran the Aireys Inlet Post Office for years after a career in education. Starting as a classroom teacher, she later qualified as a Physical Education teacher and taught until knee problems—and eventually three knee replacements—sent her back to the classroom.

A keen sportsperson, Sue played A Grade basketball and, with her husband, became heavily involved with the NBL and the North Melbourne Giants. After buying the Aireys Post Office in 2007 and selling it in 2019, she chose to stay in the community she loves.

Today, Sue remains busier than ever. She volunteers at the Repair Café, serves as Secretary of the Anglesea Probus Club and editor of its newsletter, is a Rubbish Ranger, an active CWA member, and still finds time for a twice-weekly game of Mahjong.
