Repair Cafe Surf Coast

Repair Cafe Surf Coast Repair Cafes are all about repairing things (together) We are fighting the throwaway culture and building community one fix at a time!

The Repair Café Surf Coast was started by two Fairhaven residents in July, 2017 with volunteers from across the Surf Coast. Each month (except January and July) we bring together a team of skilled volunteers from our community to help visitors repair all their broken and worn-out items and save them from landfill.

Since April 12 we’ve been out of sight.

Meet Liz

Liz has called Moggs Creek home since 2022, but her journey here has taken a few fascinating turns. Originally a speech pathologist working in adult rehabilitation, her career shifted when her husband’s job took them to Singapore in 2010. There, Liz discovered a love of storytelling as a guide at the National Museum. One thing led to another—she completed specialist training and went on to the Asian Civilisations Museum, where she eventually became co-head of guide training.

While in Singapore, Liz also took on the challenge of teaching the demanding Cambridge English as a Second Language course—no small feat!

Since settling on the Surf Coast, Liz has thrown herself into community life. She’s part of the Aireys Community Garden, assistant treasurer at AIRAR, speaker coordinator for the Probus Club, and an active CWA member (and by all accounts, a fantastic cook).

It all started with a simple Mahjong group—and just kept growing. These days, you’ll also find Liz at the Repair Café, helping give textiles a second life.

Our Get Knotted Workshop was such a huge success at the April Repair Café, we are going to repeat it.

So, if you want to know how to tie knots that work for different situations, come along to our workshop and learn how to select and prepare your rope, what knots to use and when, plus some hints on effective tying down. Places are limited because you will have supervised time to practice and reinforce your new skills.

Aireys Inlet Community Hall: Sunday 31 May 10.30am - 12.00 pm (all rope provided)

Shorter session… same big impact. 🔧

We've now trimmed our Repair Café Surf Coast event down to 3 hours (from 4) and still managed to pull off some seriously satisfying stats:

💥 150kg rescued from landfill
🔧 62 successful repairs (and counting!)
🧠 18 people armed with repair know-how
👕 29kg of textiles saved
♻️ 11kg of recycling sorted the right way
👥 75 community members through the doors

With 93 items brought in, only a small bunch couldn’t be revived - not bad for a quick stint!

All made possible by just 23 absolute legends volunteering their time, skills, and patience (especially with those “it was working yesterday” mysteries).

It’s proof that a few hours, a handful of tools, and a great community can go a long way.

Got something creaky, cranky or completely confusing? Bring it along next time - we love a challenge.

Our next Repair Café Surf Coast is taking a slight detour thanks to the Easter break (and a bit of hall availability juggling at the Aireys Inlet Hall).

But don’t worry—we’re still very much on, just a little later than usual.

Got something shaky, shabby, split or seriously strange? Bring it along and let our savvy volunteers work their special wonders.

- Fix it instead of ditching it
- Keep perfectly good stuff out of landfill
- Enjoy a chat and a great community vibe

Next Repair Café Surf Coast Event: April 12
Time: 10am – 1pm (last repairs in by 12:30)
Location: Aireys Inlet Community Hall

Same great repairs, same friendly faces—just with a slightly delayed start.

Meet Michael.

Michael has had a place in Aireys Inlet for 17 years and made the move permanent six years ago. Before swapping city life for coastal calm, he was Network and Technology Managing Director at Telstra.

Retirement hasn’t slowed him down. Michael keeps his hand in with private consultancy, executive coaching and mentoring, sharing his wealth of experience. And, to keep things interesting, he offers hot stone and remedial massage from home. From high-tech to healing hands!

Keen to give back, Michael has immersed himself in the community. He’s joined the local CFA and was recently elected President of the Aireys Inlet Traders and Tourism Association. His first major project is the Sensational Aireys festival, running from 29 May to the end of June.

Michael joined the Repair Café last year and volunteers repairing electrical and electronic items, as well as solving tricky IT problems. If it has a plug, a circuit board or confusing error messages, Michael’s your man.

The Repair Café is fortunate to have him on the team.

Tom from Lorne was delighted when our versatile volunteer Nick was able to fix his broken stool.

Tom was very upset when it broke as it is just the right height for him to sit on when putting on his shoes and socks. He tried to glue it himself but it didn’t hold.

Fortunately, Nick was able to glue it and then reinforce the break with metal braces. Another Repair Café success story!
