Repair Cafe Surf Coast Repair Cafes are all about repairing things (together) We are fighting the throwaway culture and building community one fix at a time!

The Repair Café Surf Coast was started by two Fairhaven residents in July, 2017 with volunteers from across the Surf Coast. Each month (except January and July) we bring together a team of skilled volunteers from our community to help visitors repair all their broken and worn-out items and save them from landfill.

Got a hole in your favourite shirt? Don’t throw it out - learn to mend it!

Join us at the Embroidery Basics Workshop at Repair Café Surf Coast and discover how hand embroidery can give your well-loved clothes a new lease on life.

Bring along a shirt or top with a hole or tear, and learn the basics of embroidery for mending. All other materials are provided, so you can focus on learning a new skill and giving your clothes a second chance.

A big thank you to everyone who made Sunday’s Repair Café a success!

It may have been a little quieter than usual, with only 44 visitors, but there was still plenty happening at Repair Café Surf Coast.

Our 28 amazing volunteers helped repair 63 items, keeping useful things in use and out of landfill.

Together, we helped save 75kg of material from landfill, including 18kg of e-waste. Only 7kg ended up needing to go to landfill — a great result for our community and the environment.

A special thank you to Rob G. for running his Garden Tool Sharpening workshop. The attendees all picked up some great practical skills to help keep their garden tools working better for longer.

And, of course, thank you to everyone who brought along something to repair, shared a skill, helped out, had a chat or simply supported what we do.

Repair, reuse, learn and keep things out of landfill.

We’re looking forward to seeing you again in November — Sunday 8 November.

REPAIR CAFÉ SURF COAST IS ON NEXT SUNDAY!

Sunday 4 October is our next monthly Repair Café Surf Coast - and there are two great reasons to come along!

1)THE REPAIR CAFÉ - 10AM TO 1PM

Got something that’s broken, worn out or just not working properly?
Bring it along and see if our wonderful volunteer repairers can give it a second life.

You can also come along simply to see what happens at our Repair Café, meet the volunteers and discover all the ways we’re helping keep useful things out of landfill.

There’s plenty happening throughout the morning, including:
🛠️ Mechanical & electrical repairs 🧵 Sewing repairs 🧒 Kids Tinkering Zone ♻️ Textile recycling drop-off 💡 Repair advice and plenty of useful tips 🤝 and a chance to meet and chat with other locals.

2) GARDEN TOOL SHARPENING WORKSHOP - 10:30AM TO 12PM

While the Repair Café Surf Coast is in full swing, you can also learn how to give your garden tools some much-needed TLC.

Tired of wrestling with blunt secateurs, struggling with your shears or wondering why your spade just isn’t cutting it?

Our Garden Tool Sharpening Workshop is a hands-on session where you’ll learn some simple, practical techniques to sharpen and care for your garden tools.

Bring along your:
- Secateurs
- Shears
- Spades
- and any other garden tools that could do with a little attention!

It’s a great opportunity to learn a useful new skill and keep your favourite garden tools working for longer - rather than sending them into retirement!

Meet Dani.Dani, who after two years in Fairhaven has now made the move from renter to proud homeowner! She and her partn...

Meet Dani.

Dani, who after two years in Fairhaven has now made the move from renter to proud homeowner! She and her partner left the city looking for a sea change and quickly fell in love with the Surf Coast’s natural beauty and community.

Dani is currently completing her Electrical Apprenticeship and will be a qualified Electrician in 2027. Before taking up the tools, she worked for Local Government in the Sports and Recreation sector, with a key focus on increasing female participation in sport, as well as the management of Council’s sporting facilities and assets.

Sport has always been a big part of Dani’s life, having played Roller Derby for 12 years. She had the amazing opportunity to compete in the USA, Canada and Europe, with her team winning the 2017 World Championship in Philadelphia.

Dani describes herself as being a “curious and creative problem-solver” and is happiest when she’s away from a desk, busy with hands-on work, enjoying fixing and making things.

These days, whether she’s tackling an electrical job or figuring out how to repair something, Dani is happiest when she can roll up her sleeves and get involved.

Another Repair Café Surf Coast event done, and once again, our amazing volunteers have shown what can happen when a community gets together and decides that “just throw it out” isn’t good enough!

A huge thank you to our 28 volunteers for giving up their time, knowledge and patience to make it all happen.

Meet Bruce,

Bruce is one of our Repair Café volunteers, who has certainly had an interesting journey!

Bruce moved to Torquay two years ago from Texas with his Australian wife, a Torquay native. His career began as an electrician, but eventually led to his work in biomedical electronics in several large hospitals in the U.S. The doctors he worked with encouraged him to go to university. Bruce took their advice and, while studying, supported himself by developing electronics instruments for his university’s physics laboratories.

That decision opened the door to a whole new career in academia, eventually leading him to become a professor at New York University.

Now, happily settled in Torquay, Bruce is enjoying getting involved in the community and putting his practical skills to good use. Bruce stated that one of the best outcomes has been “getting to work with people in my new home and using my old tools for such important work.” We’re very lucky to have him as part of the Repair Café Surf Coast team!
