Algae is a natural part of our ecosystem and some blooms are harmless, but the current one in South Australia, the Karenia species, is harmful to fish and some marine animals. This algal bloom was first detected on the Fleurieu Peninsula and has since spread naturally, impacting about a quarter of South Australia’s coastline.
