Folklore Cafe PERMANENTLY CLOSED
(688)

08/02/2024

Hi all!

It’s with a very heavy heart that I have decided to close Folklore Cafe. It’s been an incredible 9 years and I feel very lucky to have been here for this long.
I never imagined I would make it this far, and would like to thank all my friends, family and loyal customers over the years to the bottom of my heart.

I’ve learnt that culture and community takes time, patience, care, and wholesome intention. Folklore has been a collective effort by everyone and I can’t thank you all enough for that. It’s an experience I will look back on with love and fondness for the rest of my life.

A huge thank you to all of the staff past and present and to my family. This would have not been possible without all of you. You have all worked so hard and shown so much love and support in so many ways.

Our final day will be this Sunday February the 11th❤️

Anika x

THIS FRIDAY : NO NEWS

Born from jam sessions in the back end of 2021, Cam Tonkin, Simon Possingham and Sonny Puglisi together form No News.

After meeting previously in Adelaide’s Jazz Conservatorium (Kaurna land), the trio reconvened and began sharing their talent and musical ideas.

The early days of this project have produced an exciting fusion of contemporary jazz and electronic that varies broadly in energy and tempo. Any given show may deliver a range that includes smooth, soft, synth-driven jams alongside percussion-laden liquid drum and bass. The group pluck from a pool of influences that includes Yussef Dayes, Bad Bad Not Good, DJ Food and 90’s jazz-influenced jungle.

THIS FRIDAY: ST. MORRIS SINNERS

St. Morris Sinners formed in late 2011. They soon made a name for themselves around Adelaide as an exciting live band, drawing influence from artists such as Nick Cave, Jonathan Richman and The Triffids (Just to name a few). Together, Stephen Johnson (vocals), Django Rowe (guitar) Miles Farnan (drums) and Lyndon Gray (bass) have woven punk, jazz, and avant-garde influences into their own style of dirty alternative rock. The band attract audiences to their live shows with their distinctive sound and raucous energy.
Since the release of their debut LP (2014), St. Morris Sinners have performed with a host of bands including King Khan & BBQ Show (Canada), The Monkey Wrench (USA), Spencer P Jones (Melbourne) and Mod Con (Melbourne) and Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds (USA) and have toured Australia numerous times to growing crowds.
In 2019, St Morris Sinners toured France, with the help of Beast Records (France) and performed at the Binic Folk and Blues festival to crowds in the thousands. Subsequently, the band have worked with the European booking agent, Hot Pants Productions, alongside bands such as The Beasts, Kim Salmon, Mick Harvey and The Scientists. St Morris Sinners plan to tour extensively throughout to Europe in 2023.
2021 saw the release of their first single since 2018, Zbilanc, the title track to their upcoming album. Zbilanc is the Maltese word for ‘imbalance’, which speaks to the heritage of lead singer Stephen Johnson.
The concept of the album plays with the theme of imbalance; one side is disjointed, raucous, raw and primal in its delivery, while the other side is heartfelt, somber and honest in its approach. The second single from the record, ‘Big Rev Kev’, was released on February 25. True to “Sinners” style, the song is drum and bass heavy with dissonant, wailing guitars and ominous vocals.
Zbilanc was released on the 18th of March 2022.

THIS FRIDAY : SHODASHI

SHODASHI are Sonny Puglisi, Archie Davis, Eli Biles and Jay Garland, a jazz-funk four-piece influenced by the likes of Surprise Chef, Robohands and Wes Montgomery. Heralding from the vibrant realm of the auditory eatery, the band serves up immersive soundscapes that are seasoned by a love of 70s funk, soul, and jazz. As the elaborate artisans of innovative swamp jazz, Shodashi transport their audience to dimly lit jazz lounges and cold rock cafés, crafting irresistible sonic environments and sensory ecstacy.

Limited capacity so don’t miss out on a ticket.
