- TRANS DAY OF VISIBILITY -

That's me on the left with my wife. I don't generally post myself online, and I also don't typically out myself but I've been told that today is the day for it so here goes.

March 31st is Transgender Day of Visibility, where the trans community makes their presence known to support each other. I don't typically publicise it, but I (Kat) am a transgender woman. I am one of the 1% of the population that the trans community makes up. Yes, 1%. That may come as a shock given the media attention that we've received over the past twelve months or so since conservative governments around the world decided that we were public enemy number one to unify people through hate of an easily targeted minority.

I tend to think that my transness is the least interesting thing about me, though I daresay that the demented orange pelican in the White House would beg to differ. I've woken up almost every day for the past year and read some now absurdity in the news related to my community. Are we being murdered with no repercussions today? Are our basic human rights being rolled back? Can I still use a public bathroom? Honestly, it's hard to keep up.

We aren't a threat. We're not the enemy. We want to exist in peace, get on with our lives and be left alone.

So the next time you read a headline about us just remember that we're all the same - trans people are just an easier target as the 1%. If they come for our rights, they'll come for yours too.

Xoxo Kat

— THE WOMEN BEHIND THE CUP —

Coffee is king in Australia, but it’s women’s history month and we want to talk to you about the queens behind your favourite flat white.

Vice Coffee Roasters is ultimately a business owned and operated by women and our mission has always been highlighting the hard work of the other women behind the coffees that we roast. Women make coffee possible from crop to cup, and that doesn't get enough recognition. To us, coffee is community and the women in our coffee community don't always get the recognition they deserve.

Did you know that women make up roughly 70% of the labour force involved in coffee farming and production?

Despite this, coffee farms are only between 20 - 30% female owned.

Crazy, right? But here’s what we also know:

When we empower women, they lift up their communities with them. Money is reinvested into their farms, their neighbours’ farms, into their schools, into health, into fairer and more sustainable practices. Cooperation is privileged over competition.

That’s why wherever it is possible, we choose female-produced coffee. It’s not always easy to make your dollar work towards a better world. But this is a space where it genuinely can and does. Over the next few weeks, we want to share some of their stories.

Pictured: Noralba Benitez, owner of El Naranjo Farm in Risaralda, Colombia. This is our second year buying Noralba's coffee and it's a privilege to be able to showcase her hard work.

- INTRODUCING OUR LATEST NATURAL FROM NICARAGUA, BY THE ALBIR SISTERS -

Sisters Martha and Ana ALbir are third generation coffee producers and are doing incredible things in Nueva Segovia. Their family farm and coffee mill are not only dedicated to producing innovative and delicious specialty grade coffee, but their contributions to their own community are equally as thoughtful. Through their mill, they provide milling and exporting services not just to their own family, but 11 other local farmers. Employment is entirely local. They have invested in local education and preschool programs within their community. And they have led the way in Nicaragua with an ecoforestry coffee model which preserves native flora and fauna, protects water sources and biodiversity.

In short, these women represent everything we love here at Vice. Quality coffee by quality humans.

In this cup, you will notice creamy notes of hazelnut praline and juicy Ribena blackcurrant. More than that, we hope you will also taste the labour of love that has gone into every stage of its journey to you. We hope we did Martha and Ana justice. đŸ©·đŸ©”

New year, new look, but we’re still up to our old tricks

Hey gang. It’s 2026 and is it even possible that the world’s gotten weirder? Luckily, coffee is constant and as unapologetic addicts, we remain as ever, committed in solidarity to satisfying your daily vice.

(We’re still talking about coffee, right?)

We’d say we had a restful break over the holidays, but then, we’d be lying. Instead, we’ve been busy cupping new coffees, roasting some old faves, and cooking up some sneaky new plans for the year ahead. (Hint: Watch this space!)

Whatever YOUR plans are for 2026 - running a marathon, running for office, running away, or something truly insane like running a cafe - one thing is for certain. You’ll need a good cup of joe to get it done and at Vice we’ve got you covered.

Check out the link in our bio or head straight to www.vicecoffeeroasters.com.au to get in touch. Locally roasted, ethically sourced, and guaranteed to be the best thing about your morning. (Or at least in the top 3. I don’t know your life.)

Love,
Kat & Kate

- NEW LOOK, NEW GOODIES -

We've teased what we've been up to in previous posts, but now is the time for a hard launch! Thanks to the hard work of our friends .au, Vice has received a gorgeous glow-up. We've kept the cheeky touches you all know and love us for, but with a sleeker look and a new host of unique character designs inspired by the places that produce our coffee. This redesign has coincided perfectly with the landing of our new REFILLABLE coffee tins, which are available online and through our retail partners.

Welcome to the next step in our journey, and the new face of Vice Coffee Roasters! (Personally, we think she's looking pretty dang good... 😉)😍

- MEET THE ROASTERS #2 -

This is Kathryn (Kate) Murphy. Kate and I met in our second week of law school - about seventeen years ago. In that time I haven't met a better person, or friend, than Kate.

She's been working with me for around the last eighteen months in the roastery, after spending many years working behind various coffee machines around Adelaide, and she recently made the jump to become the other half of Vice ❀ in her time in the business she's been my rock, endeared herself to our clients and developed into an incredible coffee roaster.

Kate lights up every room she walks into, learns voraciously and approaches everyone with warmth and kindness. She's also a raging nerd, loves Dungeons and Dragons and has played through every storyline in Baldur's Gate 3. Yes there are many. No, I'm not joking.

Kate's fatal flaw is that she's desperately clumsy. If you zoom in on the second picture, you'll see green in that tub of roasted coffee that she's eyeballing. That's because Kate spun around and knocked the drum door open with her elbow in the middle of a roast, pouring raw coffee into the batch that she'd just carefully roasted. Bad luck love, that tub's going in the bin.

Welcome to Jackass đŸ”„
