OFFICIAL STATEMENT BY THE SIAVONGA POULTRY FARMERS ASSOCIATION ON THE PASSING OF DR. NAMANI MOONZE, PERMANENT SECRETARY - SOUTHERN PROVINCE

It is with deep sorrow that the Siavonga Poultry Farmers Association has learnt of the passing of Dr. Namani Moonze, Permanent Secretary for Southern Province.

Dr. Moonze was a dedicated public servant who served the people of Southern Province with commitment, integrity, and a strong desire to see development reach all districts. During his time in office, he supported programs that aimed to improve livelihoods, including agriculture and small-scale farming which many of our members depend on.

As farmers, we benefited from a provincial administration that sought to create an enabling environment for agribusiness to thrive. His leadership will be greatly missed.

On behalf of all poultry farmers in Siavonga, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Moonze family, the staff at the Office of the Provincial Administration in Choma, and the entire community of Southern Province.

We pray that the Almighty God gives the family strength and comfort during this difficult period. May Dr. Namani Moonze’s soul rest in eternal peace.

LET TALK CHICKEN

In broilers, fewer feathers (delayed feathering) can often be a sign of rapid growth, especially when the chicks are:

✅ Active
✅ Eating well
✅ Drinking properly
✅ Free from signs of disease

This happens because fast-growing broilers tend to direct more energy into body mass gain than feather development. It’s common in breeds like Ross 308.

📝 But note:
If the bird looks weak, has poor appetite, or other symptoms then delayed feathering could be a problem, not a growth sign.

Siavonga Chicken Farm Embarks on Village Chicken Project

In response to growing interest in village chickens, Siavonga Chicken Farm has initiated a sampling project to rear local village chickens. Our goal is to graduate to commercial production within three months.

Project Objectives:

1. Improve livelihoods: Enhance food security, income, and nutrition for local households.

2. Test innovative techniques: Trial latest technologies and methods in disease control, vaccination, and breed improvement.

3. Capacity building: Train local households and youth groups to become outgrower farmers.

During the trail, we will setup:
1. A DIY demonstration chicken house to showcase best practices in village chicken production.

2. Source improved breeds for village conditions.

3. Establish connections for better market access.

Target Beneficiaries:
Local households and youth groups will be engaged in village chicken production.

Expected Impact:

1. Food security: Increased availability of nutritious food.

2. Economic growth: Contribution to national economic development.
