The 3 Foodies Western Cape

The 3 Foodies Western Cape Food and wine is best shared together with friends.

The three of us go to great lengths to visit as many restaurants as we possibly can to experience the incredible range in the Western Cape, from top restaurants to little unknown gems.

4 December - Stoep, Laborie Wine Estate - the three of us went to Paarl to visit the Christmas Market at Simonsvlei Wine farm, Spice Route for some shopping and had lunch at Stoep at Laborie.

It was one of the hottest days sofar this year with 36 degrees Celsius. The big tent at Simonsvlei was quite hot inside. The stalls had a great variety of products for sale, good for some Christmas gift shopping.

We had a reservation at Stoep which is located on the Laborie Wine Estate. We always try out places we haven’t been before. This time we didn’t expect much of the estate itself. Stoep however did look very promising.

Turns out that Laborie is an absolute gem! The vineyards sprawling with Paarl Rock as a backdrop and beautiful manicured gardens. The old Cape Dutch architecture in combination with a contemporary bistro, a Farmers Market with beautiful products…I went a bit overboard but I promise you, I was eating very well again that evening too. (My foodie friends say that im always hungry 🤣)

But first a description of the lunch we had. The heat of the day naturally impacted our selection of dishes.
Richard had creamy mussels, which he greatly enjoyed. Pamela had the Chef’s salad, which was super delicious and could have fed two. I ordered the Springbok Carpaccio and the fried calamari, both starter portions. The carpaccio was spot on and I could have eaten a lot more of this. The calamari was a bit salty for my taste. The sauce tartar was not homemade and I’ve had the exact same sauce at Snoekies in Kalk Bay. For a venue such as Stoep I would expect a little better. A sauce tartar is really easy to make and will compliment the other quality ingredients so much better.

Our next stop was at Spice Route where we bought spices and teas for home use. All three of us love to go here and usually spend too much.

For dinner at home that evening I used the ingredients bought at the Farmers Market: fresh tagliatelle, baby spinach and salmon, complimented with Simonsvlei 1945 Reserve Selection Pearl White blend…I am getting hungry again 😋
But first I have to workout at the gym before I allow myself lunch somewhere 🤣

21 November - Belly of the Beast, Harrington Street - Pamela’s birthday 🎈💕

For her birthday Pamela invited a bunch of friends for special dinner at Belly Of The Beast.

This restaurant changes their menu every 6 weeks and this means you always have a new experience.
The first time Richard and I were there we had our vegetarian friend Fiona with us and contrary to what you’d expect from a restaurant with this name, they served her one of the best meals in her life.

I have taken photos of the different dishes that were served on this occasion. My favourites were the palette cleanser, a blood orange sorbet, the Puglia and the Baked Alaska. I tried eating the gizzards and loved the taste but personally I’m not crazy about the texture and the thought of what I was eating 🫣
The Tongkatsu wasn’t my favourite either. I’ve been to Velddrift several years back. It’s a small town that is famous for its bokkum, a dried fish. There I had the pleasure of tasting bokkum and I must have had my fill for the next couple of years. As a result the bokkum dust didn’t sit well on my palate. I believe the others did indeed enjoy it very much 😆

All in all it was a great dinner experience. The atmosphere is superb, the kitchen brigade is very skilled, the people in the front of the house both very professional and engaging 🙏🏻💕

It has been a while since we last posted a review. I must confess that I have no excuse for this and we had plenty of restaurant experiences. Therefore a bit of a recap of the past couple of months in the following posts 😆

14 November - Una Más Mezcaleria, 77 Regent Street, Sea Point. This tiny restaurant has a great vibe, lovely Mexican tapas and an impressive menu of Tequila, Mezcal and cocktails. When crowded it does get a little noisy.

I am going to get into trouble with this post 🤣

Yesterday I was invited by friends to join them for lunch at Marble Restaurant Cape Town for the Restaurant Week Special. 3FWC had wanted to sample their menu for quite some time but we didn’t get round to it, yet 😬

The all around views from this venue are incredible, being situated on the second floor of the historic Union Castle Building at the V&A Waterfront. From our table we had a grand view of the City Bowl District with Table Mountain as a backdrop.

The complimentary focaccia was delicious and had a lovely crisping crust, downside was that we had to use our fingers to get into the salt flakes which then spilled on the table. I didn’t touch the butternut purée because, 1. I’m not a great fan of the ingredient, and 2. It was left uncovered on every table for I don’t know how long.

My friend Tony and I both had the Asparagus starter, and what an incredible dish this was! I am quite often impressed with the dishes our chefs in Cape Town invent but this was one that deserves a special recommendation. I would have licked my plate, had this not been such a posh venue 😆

Fons had opted to have only a main and a dessert. I felt sorry for him at first for missing out on the Asparagus. However he made up for it with his main. His Sirloin was done to perfection and came with a salad that was presented beautifully.

Tony and I had the catch of the day, a Sea Bass with pickled vegetables in a creamy sauce. Tasty and well presented. However, when I saw Fons’ Sirloin I wished I had opted for that dish.

Only Fons had a beautiful dessert which was lemon flavoured with different textures. Of course Tony and I had scored some extra spoons to help him finish it 😬 A scrumptious finale of this gastronomic experience!

I’m looking forward to have dinner soon at Marble, this time together with my 3FWC buddies 🙏🏻💕

3FWC went to check out the newly opened Indian streetfood restaurant Kapoochka at the Riverlands Mall, with easy parking in the parking garage below.

It struck us how much more busy the entire mall is these days and the choice of restaurants is absolutely great. People with different budgets should be able find something to eat.

Kapoochka is a clean venue with a large, half open kitchen, the menu that they present is quite elaborate. The amount of people that visited the restaurant is testament to the quality of their food.

We all love the pani puri, so we had to taste them all. Pamela ordered the Avocado & Potato Chaat and I had the Lamb Biryani. All very tasty and sizeable portions. I took my leftovers home for the next day when the Biryani tasted even better. Richard ordered several curries for later consumption too.

Our lovely waitress was incredible, even this being her first day on the job.
The only advice we could give management is regarding the menu. The restaurant opened only a few weeks ago and already the menus are falling apart and we felt awkward holding them. Other than this we had an excellent experience and Kapoochka is a great addition to the City of Cape Town, for many the greatest culinary city in the world 😉

Pamela and I went for a walk with Cooper through the vineyards of Groot Constantia Wine Estate on this warm and sunny day. The backdrop of this estate is truly one to behold!
We had lunch at one of my personal favourite spots called Jonkerhuis.

We shared a couple of dishes from their menu and had a lovely rosé to accompany our lunch.
The salad was tasty and abundant, the chicken liver pate was scrumptious. The gratineed gnocchi was by far our favourite…we couldn’t stop raving about this dish.

The estate is dog friendly. Many old Cape Dutch manors can be seen in the surrounding area. The views stretch from Table Mountain all the way to False Bay and the mountain ranges in the distance.

Pamela and I were on a shopping spree yesterday. Around lunchtime we happened to be at the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock. Having worked up an appetite we landed ourselves at The Test Kitchen: Fledgelings. Neither of us had been there before and had it high on our list. How spoiled we are in Cape Town to have a long list of ‘must visit’ restaurants! 🙏🏻💕

On entry we, just like every other patron, were announced to the kitchen bridgade and greeted with their enthusiastic response from their stations in the open kitchen. Our friendly waiter Stan was professional and kind, available but not hovering. Ambient and stylish, TTK-Fledgelings offers you a great gastronomic experience.

Priced at R550 (€27.50) pp, on the higher end of the market, we had a two course lunch that was good value for money in our experience .
We both had the super tasty KFC (Korean Fried Chicken/ponzu emulsion/asian slaw), Pamela as a starter and I had it as a main. My starter was an even more delectible Tuna Tartare/miso & black garlic mayo/pap tuile/yuzu dressing/nori/togarashi. Pamela had the Pumpkin Pie/chestnuts & sage/balsamic & truffle dressing/goats cheese cream/pumpkin & celeriac dauphinoise, which was beautifully presented and tasted likewise.

The wine list included the beautiful Vermentino white blend by Ayama Slent Farms which we ordered to accompany our food. We have written about this wine farm before and have scheduled to return there on 12 Oct for the Artichoke Festival. Looking forward to seeing Guiseppe and Chiara and their lovely staff again soon! 🤗💕

Two days after we visited The Waterside, the four of us went to Hiro Izakaya for lunch. Pamela and Andreas had already been here and were bragging about the Japanese style food. Both Richard and I didn’t need much convincing to join them on their second visit at Constantia Uitsig Farm.

Located in one of the cute little cottages on this wine farm, we sat outside on the terrace. Inside we found the venue a bit too dark and we like to see the food as much as we like to savour it.

The menu has an abundant selection of small dishes, 8 per 2 people to share for only R500, which is about €25. We are all in agreement that not one was disappointing. However, the Fish Tacos stood out in excellence. Also, it’s difficult to find good Arancini’s, the ones at Hiro are truly amazing.

It is well worth it to travel from town to this lesser known gem. Hiro Izakaya is a lovely addition to Cape Town’s culinary establishments 🤗

A couple of weeks ago we treated ourselves, together with our friends Andreas and Anetta, to a Winter Special at The Waterside Restaurant at the V&A Waterfront

A side note here, a few benefits to staying in South Africa during the winter months:
1. In between colder spells we get these ‘champagne days’ where the sun is set in a deep blue sky, warming our bones and recharging our souls,
2. Winter Specials at many of the top restaurants that allow for frequent affordable visits 😉

Any time of the year we are very much spoiled in Cape Town when it comes to the incredible amount of top level culinary experiences to be had in our part of the world. Cape Town should be high on your list if youre looking for a gastronomic travel destination.

The Waterside (which is part of the same restaurant group as Pier, La Colombe, etc.) is one of our favourites. Their Winter Special showcased Chef Roxy Mudie’s (and her kitchen brigade’s) culinary skills. Beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. The latter is impossible to capture in pictures, but don’t take my word for it…you have to go and taste for yourself.

Those lollipops OMG! The Yellowfin Tuna Ponzu was from the Gods. The Cactus Garden pallet cleanser was such a burst of flavour that I still dream about it ❤️

Andreas and I differed in our opinion of the main course that consisted of Kingklip as the main protein. Which he found absolutely exquisite and I experienced it as a little too sweet for my taste. However, like all the other dishes, it was executed perfectly and a delight for the eyes to feast upon.

In the meantime we have sampled some other places also, which I intend to write about soon. So stay tuned for more 🤗

Last Thursday the 6 of us went for dinner at Blanko, one of the restaurants at The Alphen Hotel in Constantia.

Some of us had been before, like on the Supper Club evenings that are themed. The Alphen Hotel is such a beautiful setting and the restaurant has such warm and authentic charm with a luxurious decor. It is just stunning! 🤩

Daniel, our waiter, had his first day on the job and was being trained and coached by his supervisor throughout our experience. He is a lovely person, did very well and we hope to see him again on a return visit. We are sure to come back.

Our starters were delicious, especially we can recommend the Arancini and the fried squid, these have the wow factor 😋

Our main course was for the most part excellent. Richard’s prawns were perhaps the best in preparations, flavour and plating.
My Salt & Pepper Fillet was soft as butter and cooked to perfection, however the meat itself was not as flavourful as I would have hoped. The Spiked Béarnaise missed the spike but the sauce was otherwise perfect.
Pamela’s Sirloin was good and tender, but again missed its flavour.

Most of my foodie friends had space for dessert, not me though…but I did steal a bite from each dessert that was ordered, I had to form myself an educated opinion of course 😬😉

The Tiramisu was like velvet and beautifully light. It could have done with an extra splash of espresso. I myself also prefer the extra tone that a liqueur would add, however it was delicious all the same.
The Apple Crumble was the dessert that I most enjoyed because the crumble was full of nuts and the tart crust tasted like cream butter biscuits and it had a firm crisp 💕

All in all it was a very pleasurable experience. Staff is excellent and friendly, atmosphere is great, the whole experience overall is positive. We will be back for more.

And before I forget, Thursday Jazz is at the back of the restaurant through another entrance…we have been there last tear, loved and highly recommend it!
