Many people have heard the term “ceremonial grade matcha.”

In reality, this is not an official grading system used in Japan.

In Japan, matcha is not classified by terms like ceremonial or culinary.
Instead, quality is shaped by three important factors:

• Harvest timing – the tenderness and maturity of the leaves
• Cultivar – the specific tea variety used
• The farmer’s knowledge and technique in cultivating and shading the tea fields

These elements determine the character, balance, and depth of a matcha.

The word “ceremonial” became popular mainly in international markets as a marketing term. While it often suggests higher quality, it does not represent an official Japanese standard.

At AOI Asia Matcha, we focus on what truly matters:
origin, cultivar, harvest, and the craft.

Because the story of matcha begins long before it reaches the bowl.
