In the early 70s, a new wave of ideals of freedom, feminism, and the desire for self-expression spread globally, and Japan was no exception.
As a rebellion against Japan’s strict male-dominated society, the Sukeban スケバン emerged: gangs composed entirely of female members (“Su” meaning girl, and “banchou” thief).
They radically changed the portrayal of sweet-eyed, innocent girls in short school skirts, victimized by a male-driven society. Instead, a Yakuza-style female hierarchy was born, with its own rules, traditions, and rituals. They opted for long skirts as a protest against being objectified, comfortable Converse sneakers instead of moccasins, and their outfits featured punk and anarchist influences.
The Sukeban changed the image of Japanese femininity by challenging traditional expectations of what girls should be. They influenced fashion, as their look became iconic, and they became major pop-culture archetypes in anime, films, and manga.
