Malachai. What does this billboard and my son’s name have in common?
Last week there was a horrid billboard located on the Edens spur in our community’s backyard. The other day , , and along with community members got the billboard taken down and replaced it with this.
This past Monday Malachai had the privilege of a driving lesson. He shared his conversation with the instructor. The instructor shared was from Iran, some of his family’s history, and his life here. He said Malachai had an incredible name and asked the origin of it. Malachai hesitated and then said, “ I dont know.”
Then spiral of thoughts: what if this person has something against Jews? What if he told me to drive somewhere and I didn’t come home? What if he failed me because of my response? What if...
Malachai is aware there are good and supportive people in the world. He is also aware of how much hate, violence, antisemitism, and vile behavior there has been against Jews. For those that havent been able to see the effect of the words and actions being spewed around the world towards Jews, this is a small part of it. Many Jewish people, our kids, dont feel safe. It is impacting their lives in ways that can be hard to understand.
I know Malachai is proud to be Jewish. He felt ashamed that he didnt say that for our family’s purpose, there was a connextion to Judaism and Israel, that it is also from the Bible and Torah, and the meaning behind it. He and I spoke about fear and safety and how Jews value life. We talked through what he can do for himself, and strategies he can use to accept fear, safety and discomfort will sometimes take over pride and outspokenness in moments, and how to feel OK with that.
Would your kid feel safe responding to that question?
Are you having conversations like this with your kids?
If you haven’t spoken up yet about antisemitism and hate towards Jews right now, I challenge you to think about that, to speak up. Speak against antisemitism against Jew, the hate we are seeing in our yards, communities, and around the world so all our kids can grow up in a kinder, safer world.
