Out past the end of the pavement, where the dirt turns to dust and the dust turns to stories, there's a group of riders who call themselves friends but act a little bit like mountain mischief makers, or smile planters. They carry Gumbys wherever they go. They load up their side-by-sides and ride the mountain trails, stopping in quiet spots where the trees lean in to listen. On a stump by the river, on a warm rock near a campfire ring, on an old fallen log by a lookout, they leave a little green Gumby or a Gumby face rock behind. With a short note written on the back, saying something a little different each time, just to make you smile when you find it. No rules. Just a tiny, bendy or βflexibleβ reminder that somebody out there wanted you to smile today. "Take it or leave it," they say. "As long as it makes you happy, it's doing its job." One of those Gumbys found his way to a funny little pizza place in Secesh called Yeti. He didn't walk there on his own. He was carried in, tucked in the pocket of one of those riders, and set gently on the Rock Friend rock like he'd finally reached home base. For a while he was alone. He soaked up the sun, watched the dogs, listened to Yeti laughter, and grinned his painted grin for everyone who walked by. Gumby was the very first Rock Friend, and he watched, happy, as more and more Rock Friends showed up around him. Now he wasn't alone anymore he had many friends. Then one day, that first Gumby was gone. At first, the Rock Friends worried. The big rock that used to hold him felt a little empty. The garden was still full of color, but the space where he'd sat was just cold and empty. Maybe he fell. Maybe someone took him. Maybe he was on an adventure.
Not too long after First Gumby disappeared, a new Gumby arrived. This one was bigger, bolder, painted full-body on a rock like he'd stepped forward to introduce himself. He settled into the garden like a leader, the new captain or "Sarge" of the Rock Friends, keeping watch over the porch, the road, and the people who came and went. And one day, the riders came back. They pulled up in front of Yeti in a line of dust and engines, the same kind of side-by-sides that had been sneaking Gumbys into the mountains around here. Then Pokey showed up in a somewhat awkward place, ready to join his new friends on the rock. Then a Gumby face on the Friends rock appeared. Was this a friend or a family member of First Gumby? Then more Gumby friends. The family wasn't shrinking with First Gumby rock missing. It was growing!
They told us a little secret about the trails, Gumbys, and smiles. They say there are Gumbys hiding everywhere. They're hiding all over these mountains. On trails, at campsites, near creeks and lookouts. Some get picked up and taken home to new Rock Friend gardens. Some stay right where they are, greeting every hiker and rider that passes.
They say Gumbys are easier to find than a Yeti, so if you start spotting them, you'll know you've wandered into something special.
This is when we realized First Gumby isn't missing. He went on assignment. One day, a rider saw him in the Rock Friend garden, smiled, and knew exactly what to do. Gumby didn't get stolen. He got promoted. He was set into a side-by-side, bounced down the road, and disappeared into the maze of trails to do what Gumbys do best: show up in unexpected places and make people smile.
Back at Yeti, the Rock Friend crew holds down the fort. Big Rock Friend Gumby stands tall with his painted grin. The Rock Friends sit together in the garden, quiet and still. Painted faces, flag rocks, and smiley dots all huddle close like they're sharing a secret they'll never say out loud. They don't talk. They don't move. They just sit and watch, and somehow, every person who stops to look walks away smiling, like those little painted grins taught them how. They'll always remember First Gumby, the one who started it all, the very first Rock Friend. They miss him, but they're not sad. They know he's out there on an adventure, doing what Gumbys do, and that makes them happy. And now there are new Gumby friends around them, keeping his spirit alive in the garden, carrying First Gumby in their hearts like a story that never ends.
They tell every kid and every grown up who stops to look: "He's okay. Our first Gumby is out in the wild now. He's riding with friends, hiding on rocks, moving from garden to garden. He's part of something bigger than just this boulder." Somewhere out there, on a ridge above Secesh or beside a fire ring on a river bar, there's a little green Gumby or a painted Gumby face waiting for the next person to find him. Maybe they'll take him home. Maybe they'll leave him for the next rider. Maybe he was just moved to a new spot on the mountain. Either way, the mission is the same. Make somebody smile.
And here at Yeti, the Rock Friends family is ready to greet any Gumby who wanders back off the trail, dusty and tired from adventuring, with just these questions: "How was the ride? Did it make you smile?"
