What do you do when you no longer have your Mom to call? Maybe it’s a recipe question or something about the kids that you need some advice on. Maybe it’s about how to navigate the political divide that’s bound to come up on Thanksgiving around the big family table. Maybe it’s just about which earrings to wear with your new red sweater. Whatever “it” is, it stings. It hurts deeply. The empty hole in your heart fills with tears and the realization that you won’t get to hug her neck or smell her perfume or see her sweet face again this side of Glory. Let me apologize in advance to the 22 guests who will be piling in soon - the Turkey may have had more than a few salty tears added to the seasoning this year. And while there will be an empty seat at the table, we will take comfort in knowing that Mother is where she was destined to be-in the presence of her King- this Thanksgiving. Her spirit will remain in our home. I will be envisioning her smiling down on us as we choose to gather in mismatched chairs and loud conversations, music, great food and that darn television blaring in the other room. But my heart shall remain calm and grateful that she walked this earth for 90 years and touched the life of many generations. We shall gather anyway. We shall give Thanks anyway. We shall celebrate family anyway. Because our Mom wouldn’t have it any other way. And I’m grateful. Now let’s just hope my tear ducts cooperate with my heart. ❤️🌈❤️
